Anyone invest with Fidelity.com

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has advice or feedback on investing with Fidelity or similar
firms?

I know little about investing and need some guidance. Although the economic forecast
doesn't look that good, I'm just seeing what's out there.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

i traded on etrade for about a year...thanks to an employee stock purchase plan.

ii got out 6 months ago.

and its looking like a good idea at the moment.

Go to the Message Boards on MSN Money's web site and just search for and read some pertinent information there for a couple hours. If you 'know little about investing' then you NEED to do a LOT of brushing up before throwing money out into the market.

I'm no financial planner by any means, just just to get you started, thinking about what you want your investment money to do for you, and when you want it to do it? Do a lot of thinking...you'll know you're done thinking after your brain has spun itself in circles a few times and you keep coming back to the same answers. Then invest.

Go read up on the different types of investments such as bonds, money market, stocks, mutual funds. Any of the large brokerages will have research materials online. There are stocks that can be good investments even in negative growth periods, including those of companies that provide staples such as toilet paper and toothpaste (gotta have those), medical, bear market funds and inverse index funds.

Hi,

I am not sure exactly what the question is - whether you want to know if Fidelity.com is the place to invest or whether they offer the best advice.

But I do recommend that you get these two books and read them.

The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need by Andrew Tobias
Making the Most of Your Money by Jane Bryant Quinn and Peter A Janus

They will be terrific guides to help you with your investments, regards of where and how you invest.

Good luck!

Bought various stocks through Fidelity years ago, never consulted any advisers though. Currently with T.Rowe Price and very happy. Janus is good also (aside from the fact that they want your SSN as an on-line user ID which is BS). By all means stay away from Charles Schwab--they are expensive to work with.
A must read is: "The Truth About Money" by Ric Edelman. (There is a 3rd edition now). You will be glad you read it (or anything else from Edelman). It is an easy read and will provide you with an understanding of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, balanced portfolios, rebalancing portfolios and importantly, ***dollar cost averaging***. Forget about Money Magazine or MSN or "what mutual funds are hot now". All that stuff is pure news hype---BS--ignore them. Forget the herd, understand and follow the basics.
By the way, this is a great time to get in. Research stock mutual funds with a long term track record, i.e. 5-10 years or longer, buy on a dollar cost averaging basis, i.e. a little bit every month and BUY extra when prices are going DOWN as opposed to what the herd does which is the opposite.

Roth IRA is one of the simplest and best options out there today. Look to max that out before anyother investment options. The max investment is 4k this year.

That Roth max is dependent on a couple things...in '08 my max is $5k.
Did it go up this year? I know it varies if you are married, are single, or make a certain amount. The last time I changed my contributions the max was 4K. Its great if it increased to 5K. I'll have to check.
