I have four minutes of test footage that was transferred to 35mm by DVFILM.com. Still haven't been able to find time to screen it yet!

Well, actually, I *do* have a 35mm projector, but I wouldn't run this through it! It's one of those old Keystone jobs, doesn't even have a shutter, and it takes a LOT of hand-cranking to move 35mm film through it...
... somebody's working on getting a theater for us. Hopefully it'll get sorted out soon!

How did the mini35 stuff look? The "Matrix"-looking stuff? I'm concerned that it'll be too fuzzy, but I've never seen mini35 footage blown up so I am quite curious!
I've got to screen it soon, I have raised half the bucks for a DVX feature, and I want to be able to show the investors whether the DVX will hold up on the big screen. I don't know if it will, and I'm telling them to not count on it, but still, facts are facts so I'd sure like to know.

yes.. Marcus was one of the early adopters for us DVXusers, offering products that allowed us to edit that 24pa footage on normal NLE's. Welcome!

The mini35 sections might be a tad softer/more diffuse than the anamorphic sections, but you could always apply an unsharp mask in post if you wanted a crisper look (or we could do it on the film out). I would not advocate doing it in-camera though. On interlaced to film transfers we have to very careful about sharpening because it can exaggerate the aliasing, but the DVX100 in progressive/thin seems better able to handle that.
I like the look that you have without it though, it reminds me very much of Super16 to 35, but without the grain and the dirt.
If anyone wants to see our demo reel including Barry' footage we loan it out for $300 deposit + shipping. We could also set up an DVXUser "event" in LA if there's interest.

I expect that. Looking at the footage directly on the computer, and comparing anamorphic vs. mini35, it's obvious that the anamorphic was quite a bit sharper. But that 35mm DOF is hard to argue with, and I just love the cinematic look the mini35 added... the spinning ground glass, the diffused sharp edges, it looks *so good* on the small screen, but I'm intensely curious to see how it holds up on the big screen. From what you're saying, sounds like it held up just fine.

Well, now I gotta see it! How do you think it holds up, sharpness-wise, as compared to "28 Days Later"? I thought 28DL was unacceptable, just too soft and out-of-focus, and I've been anxious to see if the DVX can cross that line over to "acceptable". What you're saying has me hyped though!
Oh, there's interest -- I just have to come up with a good reason to justify the drive. Let's set it up for a Friday or something, that way I can take the family to Disneyland or something on the weekend!

Raleigh is a gorgeous facility. That would rock! But hey, whatever we can get is what we get, so no worries there. I was just asking about screen size because obviously the bigger the screen, the more the footage gets put to the test. So just let us know what you think you can arrange and when...

I've seen Alpha Cine's DV to 35mm reel in the dailies theatre here in Seattle and I thought it looked really good, in fact I was mildly shocked at how good it looked. Well shot DV looks good. Good enough that it could possibly get your foot in the door so you could step up to the next level. Of course the next potential problem area are distributors, etc... many are steeped in the tradition that only film is REAL & good enough, blah, blah blah.
American Cinematographer magazine had a review of the DVX in comparison last year ( issue?) with an ARRI SR16 III & an ARRI 35mm ( 435?) . They were very pleased with the results and said the DVX can turn out very nice prints. They loved the lens, said it was very sharp.
Unfortunately Alpha Cine didn't have any DVX footage, but started out with the Sony PD150 and then went up the ladder to HD. Most all looked really nice ( just a few spots of concern here & there) the average movie audience wouldn't see the flaws, instead they'd enjoy your story. I wonder how much film doctoring has to be done to get the results I saw?
For good cinematic results the DVX operator has focusing challenges as well as the usual limited latitude challenge. Also, color depth & getting good solid blacks can be a problem. These cameras need larger CCDs so we can get proper (narrow) DOF for story telling. I bet the small CCD chip (large DOF) is the inheritence from ENG news gathering design values. Hopefully Panasonic will follow ARRI's lead on larger CCDs for "Art" rather than "News."
MSG to MARCUS VAN BRAVEL: Marcus, we need a DVD of samples of DVX footage, etc... with exact preproduction info for DV film makers to use for the FILM OUT process. Some of us can't get away to LA. It would help everyone achieve high quality production values & you could make a few extra bucks selling it. I would think you could gather scene samples from willing clients along with a few "making of" show & tell selections you could shoot that really stress the film out requirements. It's alot of work to do this but when excellent projects start being screened around the country the word will get out & you'll be swamped. You seem to be one of a handful of labs in America that is keenly interested in pushing the frontiers of low budget high quality DV Film making forward.
