just wanted to pick up a host of nds, and was wondering if these things would cut the mustard for a basic nd filter array. they are pretty inexpensive, but if i tried to buy an entire nd filter set from say tiffen, my cost is going to more than double . so im wondering if anyone has any say on the el cheapo brand as far as getting the job done for nd. ive got a very nice polarizer that they will be used in combination with

It's not the same company that makes the jeans is it? :)

Re: anyone have any thoughts on lee brand filters?

..:) sure it is .. they make filters by compressing the leftover lint off the floor into a gelatin , and then toasting the gel in an easy bake oven until it is golden brown. .. you can also make a nice parfait from the sediment that floats tp the top of the gelatin if you scrape it off before it burns up in the furios heat of the easy bake. :P

Re: anyone have any thoughts on lee brand filters?

I have no direct experience with Lee filters, but I've never heard anything bad about 'em either. The only problem I could foresee is that resin filters are typically uncoated, so you'll have to be doubly careful about flare and such.

Are you talking about the resin or the polyester? From my understanding the resin filters are quite superior to the polyester.

Does Lee even make screw-in filters? I thought they only made 4x4, etc. That means you'd need a Lee lens hood/filter holder too, which isn't a whole lot of money but it's something else to factor in.

Re: anyone have any thoughts on lee brand filters?

ive got a mattebox to for the 4x4s and to cut the flare out, but i was thinking i would thrown the nds behind the polarizer, so that i cut as nuch refraction and flare out as i can before i put any light through the lees(the ones im looking at at the cheap polys.. ). i guess i can just try a couple out, and if they seem to get the job done, ill get the rest. otherwise ill have to step up to at least a resin filter, or go with a different brand like B+W or somthing.

Re: anyone have any thoughts on lee brand filters?

Well, of course you're free to experiment, but remember what Ken Freed says: "Never save money on anything that goes in front of your lens."

Re: anyone have any thoughts on lee brand filters?

that is so right!, i feel the same way. its somthing that will definetely affect the picture if its poor quality. but for 60 bucks, compared to 300. its worth a shot i guess. ive got my fingers crossed :) if they stink ill drop em in a sec, and cough up some more cash for somthing actually useable professionally. im hoping that the nice polarizer will take care of their shortcomings - like lack of nice coatings..

Re: anyone have any thoughts on lee brand filters?

;D Great, I finaly see a Lee inquiry. I am browsing and considering all the options out there. So does the Lee wide angle lens hood fit nicely onto the camera? And also how would it compare to a Matte Blox option? I would like to go for the Lee but hearing it from someone who has tried it would help ;D

Hey Neil,

Did you end up getting those Lee filters? I am looking at the same bunch and wondered if you could review the for me. Thanks.

Wow where did this come from, I sound like a dork in my previous post. How much I have learned over my time here at DVXuser.
