Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

TC, you can read Old English? It's a fascinating language!

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

I'm a masta at Old English. ;)

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

It's not really a language you can learn in any conventional sense. You have to read, and re-read, and re-read what you've re-read. And then logically decode what it says.

Make any sense? :D

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

:D

Because I still haven't found a copy with the Parson's Tale!

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

Oh absolutely TC! I've studied it myself a bit actually. Very, very interesting to see how things have changed between then and now. It explains a lot of the peculiar things about English!

Linguistics has always fascinated me. I love it. In fact I have a site dedicated to (yes laugh now) the languages J.R.R. Tolkien created. I was impressed by how real he made them! Honestly quite amazing (though to be expected I suppose from a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford).

I have a few articles I have writtern up there. One is quite dated but the other on syntax is new enough.

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

The funny thing about Old English is seeing it in its written form. You can see where modern English evolved from it, but it's so darn German . . . speakers of both languages could pick it fairly quickly . . .

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

My friend had a teacher in high school that spoke Elvish.

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

Agreed David!

TC:

I don't speak Elvish per se :D. I'm personally more interested in the technical side. It's a bit like old english - you can't really learn to speak it; there are too many variables both internal (we don't have enough data to construct a full grammar) and external (the darn guy kep changing his mind at times!)

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

I hear tell of people who speak nothing but Klingon to each other.

I find that highly disturbing.

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

I guess it's not as sad as spending $25,000 real USD to buy a virtual island in an online game.

Re: Anyone firmiliar with The Canterbury Tales?

Hahaha! What game was that? Everquest?

Klingons creator is still alive though which makes it easier to deal with (nothing as easy as a real language of course)!
