Me and a few collaborators just recently started shooting one and we're having one hell of a time trying to grab an audience. Just wondering if anyone has any advice or thoughts or wants to share their experiences.
I am working on writing one now but it's for an established online magazine. Establish your idea first, do test clips, get a general interest, have contest - build up a fan base.
We actually have it all shot up. A couple episodes edited. Our challenge has been garnering the audience and reaching out through social media on a minimal budget.
Granted, it was on zero budget and we had huge problems with make up and editing, which was downright bad. But I still maintain the script, acting and overall concept was fun.
One major problem was length of each episode. They were all about 14 minutes, which is just way too long for a web series. People's attention span online is very short. It might be better nowadays, when VOD and streaming is more common but still I think websites like Homestar Runner and Ask A Ninja are more successful because they're short and to the point.
Take a look - we're still working on the marketing of the actual web series and I think it really depends on your idea/concept/character development, etc.
were doing one as well, trying to keep the audience pretty squarely aimed at a limited market, and as a fake reality show so the shots dont have to be too technical, and the editing minimal. we keep the script totally open, just give general direction and technical supervision so the dialogue is fluid and organic, not acted, mostly because the majority of people cannot act lol.
we are keeping each minisode to 5 minutes, with 3 minisodes comprising a full episode, so we can be editing one or two while shooting another 2-3 episodes further on and keep the output going at a steady rate. only shooting 9 full 'episodes' so total time of just 45 minutes for the pilot series, and also involving a lot of local persons and points of interest, as well as locations, so the target audience can identify with it and maybe spot someone they know etc.
And then we're also trying to get the few subscribers we have to tell us what they think is the best bit in the actual episode so we can get them involved and use that clip to promote as well. Something short and sweet is always within everyone's attention spans.
We're also trying to direct people towards youtube to build up a community there instead of our own branded site. http://www.youtube.com/hollywoodbats
All you guys with your own series, they really look great. I'm even wondering since we're all trying to get our own audiences individually, I'm wondering if there's a way for us to help each other or cross-promote.
