Anyone ever build a ring light?

I'm looking into building a ring light out of a flouro fixture from Home Depot. It's round, two bulbs, for ceilings. I figure I can cut a hole out of the middle and attach brackets etc. Anyone ever try this or use flouro bulbs for a ring light before?? these bulbs are fairly warm and I don't think they'd give the green hue the old ones did, but I'm not positive. It seems the cheapest and easiest to build, I don't really want to make a huge board and attach a ton of tungsten bulbs all around it. I prefer portable and cheap.

I've been doing some research on this and it seems that LEDs are all the rage hen it comes to ring lights. They don't get hot or draw much power, and they are lighter and safer than tungsten or florescent, not to mention cheaper. What do you think about using an LED ring light of some sort?

I'd love an LED light but finding the equipment to build it myself might be tough. I've seen people use the LED rope lights but I have no idea what the Kelvin is on those. It can't be any worse than using florescence I imagine. I'm really trying to do something for under 100 dollars that has a decent wattage and a nice color temperature. If anyone else has used LED's I'd love to hear about it.

I'm building a copy of the Litepanels Ringlite Cinema right now.
Well, I'm waiting for everything to come in.
It's going to be the soldering job from hell.
But, I'll be saving about $7900.

Sorry, that was completely off topic.
The flouro bulbs will get very hot, but look great.
If you don't want to use wood, I'd suggest finding an old magnifying lamp that uses them, detaching the head, removing the magnifier, and use the remaining. It'll even give you real estate to mount it to a dogbone to put on rails!

home depot flouros are very likely going to have all kinds of flicker that you probably wont see until youre in post.
