Anyone else NOT looking forward to Superman Returns?

I, too, am suffering from Superhero fatigue, mainly because it's completely overtaken the sci-fi/action genre. What happened to movies like Die Hard, Aliens, Speed, The Matrix? They've been almost completely usuruped by cartoony Superhero flicks. Fortunately, there's only so many viable comic book properties out there so this cycle may end soon. Still, we'll probably get Spider-Man, Batman, Superman movies for the next several years or so.

I saw it today and I didn't really like it. I haven't seen any of the original Superman film so I don't have a problem with who the actors are. But I do have a problem with the film not playing by its own rule.

SPOILER for those who haven't seen it.

Lex Luther embedded Krytonite into the island soil and proceeds to beat the crap out of Superman when he first landed there. Yet later on Superman somehows manages to sustain contact with the island long enough to raise it into space before passing out. Sure, krytonite causes him pain (and hand blisters evidently), but the film also shows that it takes away his power as well. If he loses his power just from just touching the stuff how did he manage to raise it into space in the first place. I don't understand how the writers could not have seen this huge flaw in their script, especially since it's in the SAME SCENE.

Seen superman now. It is firmly in fourth place in all 5 movies. superman 1, then 2 then 3 then returns. 4 was too horrible to even rank.

Returns problems were too many to mention. I'll list in brief...

1 weak script written by guys who can't possibly know what they're doing. The holes and the shakiness are un believable.

2 awful casting. just about everyone is cast wrong. the prize of worst casting goes to kate bosworth as lois lane. Wow she couldn't have been more wrong for that role.

3 uninspiring lead. Routh did well, but he has no real charisma. He isn't the movie star you need for a role as huge as that. He was 'okay' though.

4 the music was weak aside of the williams elements brought back. in fact the williams bits were the best part of the whole film for me. very nostalgic.

5 the little kid. interesting idea, badly executed.

6 lex luthor trying to get land again? err hasn't he tried that before?

I paid to see this thing in IMAX 3D -- maybe others are aware, but I had no idea going into it that only four scenes were in 3D. I wouldn't even call the fourth one a "scene" ... it's more of a series of beauty shots to end the film.

I wasn't impressed with the 3D either... the least they could have done was show the opening titles in 3D. That stuff BEGS to be 3D -- and has since the original! The stuff that was in 3D seemed like flat 2D layers compostied together. The only halfway decent effect was the crystal island sequence where it lifts the boat up.

As for the film itself, I don't see why they bothered (other than $$$). It's a rehash of the original. It completely glosses over why Superman has been gone for five years ("I knew my home was destroyed but figured I'd see for myself so I did and now I'm back just in time to save you folks YAY!"). That's not enough for me.

It felt less like Superman RETURNS and more like Superman RERUNS.

Oh well. POTC 2 on Tuesday... that should lift the spirits! :)
My fav. superhero/comic book film still remains: The Rockteer!

SPOILERS AHEAD

I was tremendously disappointed with this movie. If I remember correctly, Lois Lane knew already Clark was Superman in the older movies. Also, Lois had a crush for Clark, too. She just completely ignored the man when he arrived. Treated him like he was just another guy. And Lois immediately falling back to Superman, even while living with the "White"guy? That's just not very nice- specially since the other guy seems like a nice chap.

Also, I just don't understand how "Clark Kent" can go from such an idiot in civilian form to cocky arrogant in Superman form. Look, he can be Super, but he was raised by a family in Kansas- He's phsicologically like any other human in the World.

Lex Luthor was an absolute Joke- that's one idiot supervillain! The over the top plan is so unrealistic that is downright campy! Its close to "DR Evil" idiotic! However, I have to praise Kevin Spacey's acting. He made the character watchable. If the part was well written, he could do to this movie what Jonhy Depp did to Pirates of the Caribbean.

As for the Superman actor, I think he did a solid job. He basically just coppied Christopher Reeve right down to the maneirisms. He's basically a Body double for Reeve. Nothing added, no new direction whatsoever. Just a copy. I'd ratter have the original.

Poor (and long ) movie. Terribly idiotic villain and plot, and no character development whatsoever (except for the ridiculous kid plot, which, like someone said, was a missed opportunity).

Superman's character is so strong and out of this world that it is almost impossible to relate to it. Spider-man, on the other hand, makes mistakes, is a lot more "human". Superman is just too Super, which makes him, in my book, just boring.
