Just wondering if anyone else here did this and what your genre/subject were. I got Fantasy/A window. Not exactly forte, sub-forte or third-string forte. But it was fun and my wife liked by script, so we'll see.

Anyone? Bueller?

Plagiarism as a screenwriting topic? They've got quite a sense of humor. How long was your final-round screenplay last year?

Final round script checked in at 20 pages. First rounder was 15. This year my first rounder was 12 1/2.

You can read my entry by clicking here: Dead Beat

Logline: After beat poet Greg Corso's latest work is found pinned to a dead body in a bathroom stall, he enlists the help of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg to track down the killer before the cops pin the murder rap on him.

Right, so assuming I can possibly come up with a complete story idea within a week, then I have the added pressure of the 24 hours. I usually only manage to come up with enough story to get me to the end of Act I...at least that is what people tell me after I detail out my new great idea (which, of course, I think is a full story, finally).

Good luck guys!!

Larry -- Do you consider yourself a writer or a filmmaker?

I've found that many filmmakers can't write and many writers can't make films. I think many short and indie films would be much improved if talented filmmakers partnered with talented writers rather than trying to do it themselves.

I believe I am a writer and I've been told I have a talent for writing. That is how I even got involved with filmmaking was in studying the writing aspect.

Part of my problem, in terms of writing, is not having enough confidence to sit down and actually start writing. When I do have an idea and actually start to write it out it usually begins to form and grow.

Also, I tend to get overly excited about a scene/idea I have and start talking to people before it's really had a chance to grow and develop in my mind. I think that is where I sometimes get into trouble as it is more a seed of an idea, and not a fully grown story (if that makes any sense).

Larry. I totally get that. I started out in filmmaking as a writer myself. Only when an assistant at a big production company who loved my writing suggested I try directing something did I start to seriously consider becoming a writer-director. Rather than jump right in and make a bunch of bad short films I've been spending the past year putting together a top notch crew and studying everything I can about filmmaking. At some point this fall I should have my first short in the can and my second will follow during the winter. Hopefully I can deliver what's on the page, because the scripts are strong.

Agree that nothing is worse than a half baked idea. I've had many scripts I've started and then abandoned, because the idea wasn't ripe. I've since learned to just let things ferment in my mind before attempting to put anything on paper other than the most general notes about it. A script comes much later if the idea ever takes root.

I really enjoy both the writing and the filmmaking aspects. I have shot two shorts and loved every minute of both experiences...including the writing.

I have a GREAT desire to finally write a fully developed, feature-length script...and I think that drives me to give birth to ideas before they are fully gestated. Kind of a pre-mature story c-section. Now I need to take these several ideas I have and put them in the story incubator and monitor them until they are ready to step out away from the constant care and monitoring.

Peace,
Larry
