Anyone built a DIY grid/honeycomb for the softboxes?

I am thinking about embarking on a DIY grid for the softboxes - I think they are sometimes called honeycombs/eggcrates. They go over the softbox and are really almost like a large "sos" board without the sos letters. If someone knows the real name, let me know. Any help would be great. Thanks

This topic came up before, but no real solution so far as I recall...
Cheapest non DIY way probably is taking the grids from the cheaper fotographic fixtures, cutting to fit and velcroing in place...
Thing is for me, DIY only makes sense if I can save A LOT or if the right product doesn´t exist that would fit my needs, I think a big size photo grid would be around 120$ the time to go buy the fabric and sew/glue the damn thing together isn´t worth the saving for me...
Maybe CoolLights can do sth in China...?

Yeah, I am coming to that conclusion. I was thinking about the strips using velcro to hold them together, but it really might be a lot of work. Still looking for solutions and not just yet giving up on the fabric idea. Using foamcore would be a heck of a lot easier, but it makes it less portable. I think fabric has to be the way

DavidD,
I think Bob Hill made an LCD hood out of some plastic sheets. I'm sure you can make this eggcrate out of some plastic as this. what you would do is make 2" x 24" strips (or however long your softbox is) then every 2" you put a slot 1" deep and 1/16" wide (the width of the thickness of the plastic. Then you can fit the strips together. (hope that made sense)
But it would be alot of work and its probably not worth it.

Hi all,

The plastic that siniarch is talking about is Kydex and is a thermally moldable material so it might not be a good idea to try and use it with really hot lights. That said I think there might be a way to do this with fabric but it would be a bit time consuming sewing everything up. What color would the grid need to be? If white is viable I can sew a mock up and post it Monday.

I decided not to wait until Monday. Here is a little mockup of what I think you are looking for.

Let me know if this is and I can show you how to make a bigger one.

Siniarch,

It is pretty simple for the mockup. I cut 6qty 2" x 6.5" strips of blocker fabric (opaque), sewed two pieces together at their middles to make the grid "X". From there I sewed each end of the "X" to the center of one of the 4 side pieces. Once the side pieces were sewn to the center "X" I sewed them together to complete the outside perimeter. Note that I used a 1/4" seam allowance so the final piece ends up being 6" square. To make it larger here is a rough diagram on how to cut the varying length strips. All in all it is pretty simple to do but if you have a lot of grid squares I could see it taking quite a bit of time.
