Anybody willing to help me with a simple effect?

I need to add a special effect to a guys hand for a music video that I'm shooting.

It's pretty simple (I think) but I'm not an effect guy at all so I'm lost in that arena.

Long story short: Guy will be pulling his closed fist out of his pocket. On C/U he opens his fist to reveal about two dozen little flames.

It's for a friend that is trying to get signed to a label. There's no money involved as we're all broke, lol, that's why I didn't post in the "jobs" section but of course credit will always be given and if you're in NJ or NYC then the beer is on me!

hmm, being new to FCP and editing in general I didn't know this was possible within FCP itself. I'll give it a shot tonight to see how it turns out.

Thanks iamloser

surely FCP has the ability to scale and position footage, and perform a luma key?!

You can scale and position in FCP. Click on clip in sequence. Click on Motion tab at top and adjust. I'd suggest also looking at a screen mode or a mix since lumikey sometimes creates odd edges for flames.
The problem here will be if the hand moves at all then you will have to do some trackign which FCP doesn't do. May not be an issue with the style or if the hand is resting solidly on something with a locked off camera.

..well you dont necessarily have to track although it certainly makes things easier.. but you could just keyframe the position of the layer to follow the movement.

You could try flash paper, which is a highly flamable paper that magicians use for fire effects (available at any magic store for about $5.00 for a book of twenty 3" x 5" sheets). It's great stuff, even if you don't use it in your film it's still fun to play with (that is if you're over 18).
