So i've been testing my RODE NTG2 with my Marantz pmd661 (with supermod) and it isn't as clean noise wise as i had expected. The Octava mk012 hyper-cardioid head is really clean and the senheisser g2 wireless I have is pretty clean. The RODE NTG2....eh...not so much. Is this normal?

(this is running the mics straight into the marantz)

ok so i've now discovered that when using the Marantz pmd661 with the rode ntg2, you should use the NTG2 with a battery. Prior to this i was just using the phantom power of the 661 and it was noisy to me...unacceptably noisy. However the Octava was clean as a whistle. Seems dedicated phantom powered mics work better with the 661 phantom power than dual powered( phantom and battery) mics?! I dont know but all i know is when i popped a battery in the NTG2 it was CLLLLEEAAAN. So no more phantom only with that mic. Also I was using the 661 in stereo mode with the ntg2 (without battery)and g2 lav mic and got nothing out of the input of the ntg2. I couldn't understand what the heck was going on. So i tried my Octava Mk012 and the g2 wireless in stereo mode and everything worked flawlessly. So that led me to believe the NTG2 was the problem. Again popped a battery in the ntg2 hooked it back up in sterio with the g2 and boom...it works, and works well.

Hope this info helps some other Noob

Now if Marantz would make a better sd card door that would be good. after spending $700 on a unit within days the SD card door isnt working well. this is a problem cuz the damn thing wont work if the door is open. Now i have electric tape holding it down. Uhg...so friggin annoying. Need to get some gaff tape.

Yea I had the same issue when I tried the NTG-2 without a battery on the PMD661. It was noticeably better with a battery in use. I didnt have that combo for too long though before the upgrade bug hit me, so I didnt get to use it a whole lot.
