Anybody used Blender 3D

I just downloaded the newest version of Blender 3d v.2.33a (I think). If anybody has been looking for a great 3d animating/rendering program for a lot less than Maya or 3dMax, then this is the one. Blender is absolutely free and is open source, and it runs on absolutely anything. I'm surprised they havn't made one for the Palm OS yet :).
I used to use blender back in version 2.0 but I had gotten away from it for a while, but now I'm back in full force, and let me just say that this thing is awesome. For a free program, that can be downloaded installed an running in under 2min with cable modem, it is a powerfull program. Right now I am designing an animated production logo. I'll post it when it's done rendering.
You really can't go wrong with this program, unless you count being glued to your computer even longer than normal video editing saps out of my life. It does have a steep learning curve, as is expected with most 3d programs, however, I find it easier to pick up than Maya was for me. Just thought I'd share this little tidbit of info. COmes highly recommended by the Scharkster, cha cha cha!

Yes, dude! This is a really nice package.

But the learning curve is not so straighforward.

It takes a while to get used to it, but once you learn the process, then it just flows smoothly.

Make sure you have a look at povray as well, for the rendering.

It requires you to write some code in povrary SDL (scene description language)

All the best

It is a steap learning curve, however, there are hundreds of tutorials that people have posted on the web. The best way to learn is to do. I also have ordered the new blender book, the old one is out there, and I figure I can spend $30 on something that has been in development for years now, without a cent being made on it. $30 for a great 3d animation package is good for me.
I'll have to check out that povray thing as well. there look to be some great examples of work from that site as well.

wow that is great, I have it on my system now, and with all hope, I should get around to learning it in 2-3years? Actually it look's great thanks for posting the link

Re: Anybody used Blender 3D

I recently got Blender, and I've been looking hard at using it primarily on my Linux cluster to shorten the render time.

This is one fine program, for free. Hard to beat!

The only bummer is that it doesn't interchange Maya or Lightwave files yet, but that capability will of course get added, once one of the big effects houses sees the utility in being able to do so.

This program is so good, and so useful to the likes of us, that I predict we'll end up with a 'Blender' topic on the DVXUSER forum.

But it isn't as straightforward as say Cinema 4D, Maya, 3D Studio Max.

I found those easier to learn.

I guess it has to do with the weird interface Blender has.

Apart from that, it should be really quick to pick up.

The old book was good as well. I haven't read the new one yet.
