Anybody see Total Recall?

When I saw this last night, I didn't know what camera it was shot on, but the look was enough to catch my interest. It wasn't an aesthetic I'm very fond of, just something slightly jarring about it; like a low budget TV movie look (aside from the awesome visuals / cgi). Turns out it was shot on the RED epic. I think I've seen other movies that have looked far better on the RED. It's not often the look of a film or what camera it was shot on, deters me in any way from enjoying the film... but I kept thinking back to it right up until the movie ended. This is definitely one of the few flicks I've seen this year, that could have benefited from being shot on perhaps the Alexa or some other camera.

As to the movie itself, it was horrible as well. Don't know why I was so excited to see it. August just never fails to disappoint!

I thought it would be bad...I haven't seen it nor do i plan to. But do you really think at this stage its about what camera it was shot on or more on the grading side of things? (not trying to be rude...legit question ).Personally I think its more down to grading at this point and lighting and the artistic look the director wants.

How ...in your opinion...would the Alexa have helped more than the RED?

alexa behaves much more like film than a "digital camera on steroids" like the epic. I guess thats what he ment ^^. So you need "less" to make it look like film.

You light for the stock or camera, so if this was a failure it was a failure in lighting, movement and art direction, all of which have to be modified depending on what you're shooting with. I'm seeing it Monday, however, so I don't know what it looks like.

well thats true (lighting for cam) but there are cameras who record an image that is very close to film from the getgo without the need of heavy manipulation, where as with red you need all sorts of manipulation. But this is red philosophy i guess, having maximum amout of leeway in terms of "image manipulation" but if you dont use that "leeway" you got yourself the wrong cam. . .

I actually saw it earlier and I don't think it was terrible. It was actually not too bad. As far as the cinematography, I didn't see anything wrong with it either. There was so much VFX that it almost confined the cinematography to shooting for all VFX shots. I knew it had to be RED because it did have that 'digital cam on steroids' look. Not entirely sure what you're getting at here...

Yeah, I was not a fan of this remake, reboot, whatever. I don't know how it ended, I left about 40 minutes in.

I haven't seen the original and while I didn't love the reboot, I enjoyed watching it. Sometimes you just have to check your brain. On the other hand, I found TDKR incredibly boring and wish I left halfway through. They definitely used a bunch of RED EPICs but it wasn't the only camera they used. I can't remember but they shot it here in Toronto and some friends worked on it - thought I saw pictures of other cameras.

EDIT: Maybe I'm wrong - according to Wikipedia, it was entirely shot on RED.
