Anybody rent out a room or house here?

I'm just wondering... because damn it's hard. I'm stunned that one of my friends was apparently right... that people renting a room don't seem to care about anything but the monthly cost... I mean NOTHING... else... matters.

30 year old crack house with mattress on the floor... $300-350? "bargain"... Brand new house with tons of space and modern everything... $500? "expensive". (talking private room + shared housing)

You gotta' be kidding me.

A wise investor (right now) should buy up garbage houses and rent 'em out... I'm telling you that's the answer in this economy.

You're asking if anyone here owns a rental property? I do. I had one in LA for a while -- well sort of, I just rented out a room for 400 bucks a month. The guy was a total drunk and drug abuser. He was flake -- never paid on time, broke EVERYTHING I owned, ate all my food. He even tried to nail my girlfriend when I was out of town. A first class flake. After that experience, I stopped renting to relatives.

That's actually not a punchline, he really was a relative.

No but if I may share...

Rooms around here are in the same range. 400 for a basic room with cable.
500+ can get an executive furnished room with internet and access to 'the pool'.
300-350 your looking at the lower end of everything.

I've roomed a lot. Last time I decided to post my own 'looking for room' ad in the local paper along with my age and employment status, instead of calling the 'room available' ads and asking all of the questions. I figured, let them call me if I fit the bill.

I gave my work # and in the first 1/2 hr of the paper being out I got 11 calls from females, nice decent people, and 1 male. The jokes were flying around the shop floor as I was constantly getting paged. But, I took the first offer for 400/month just minutes from work and loved it there. Give it a try sometime. It sure cuts through the BS.
