Anybody purchase a generator?

Re: Anybody purchase a generator?

I'm thiking about picking up a couple Barger Baglites.

Spec for GT6:
Flip the 16 amp switches to go from a 300-watt to a 6-K , no hot scrims. Plug into three 15-amp outlets, 60-amp cable run not necessary. Try that with a 5 K. There’s even built-in cable holders.

Spec for gt3:
Flip the 16 amp switches to change light intensity,no hot scrims to handle.
Burn only the lamps needed. Only a 15-amp home outlet is needed when used with
a combination of two 650- and one 300-watt lamps.

Re: Anybody purchase a generator?

We split between a 6500 btu emergency window air conditioner, a small freezer, and the fridge. We always had a few lights and a fan, no matter what else was plugged in. We split time between appliances because we weren't sure how much it could take. The owners manual gave a pretty clear break out of power useages and recommendations so we stuck to them.

One of my neighbors had the same unit and he plugged in power strip connected to freezer, fridge, small tv, lights, a fan, all at the same time (but no a/c unit). No problems reported.

I use it mainly now to power a two hopper daquiri machine during Mardi Gras near the parade route in Lafayette ;D

Re: Anybody purchase a generator?

Generators can be pretty darn loud for production. If you use it make sure you put it as far away as possible and you should build some sort of box cover for it to absorb some of the sound.

Re: Anybody purchase a generator?

While this topic is up, do you guys know how much it costs (on average) to rent a generator (per day)? I have a few night scenes in my next production, and seeing as how buying one wouldn't be very cost-efficient, we are thinking about renting one.

Re: Anybody purchase a generator?

Renting can run from $100 to $700 per day here in Vegas, depends on how much capacity you need, and how quiet, and how "clean" the power is.

Re: Anybody purchase a generator?

With small generators and lighting you should keep in mind that full load will draw down the voltage and you will get low color temps. Plan on getting a generator with twice the capacity you will use. I have a honda 2200 watt gen and when i pull more than about 1500w it gets pretty low in voltage. The 65oow gens can handle about 4000 without voltage drop.
They will keep running at full load but voltage will be down significantly.
With the Barger gt6 they say 15 amps X 3 for full 6k power. I don't think you will get full voltage with a 65oow gen.
Silent generators of the 300 amp variety that you can rent from motion picture lighting houses rent for around $300 or $400 per day. They are heavy and are towed by a full size truck.
Rent-all places have a wide variety of generators available for less. But they are loud.
