Anybody know how good these speakers are?

I think he means to use both, compare, then know more of everything. because let say u just used the monitor, you wouldn't know how it sounds on crappy speakers right? if u use both the u'll know how both sounds and maybe tweek it more. let say u mixed it perfect on monitors but it has sound problems in a car stereo system, you probably change it to make it sound better in a car system, if you want that music to suit that market,... yeah, sound logical. The more you test I m sure the more you'll know.

aside from that get the MS 40 ?

Aside from this being a video website...you wouldn't mix for car stereos, either...unless you're distributing different CDs for the home and for the car. Which would be a great marketing scheme to fool the general public into parting with more cash for those "special" mixes. :)

For video? If all you're doing is uploading stuff to the web - yeah, I'd say go ahead and "test" the mix on whatever. It's not going to matter much.

But if you're burning DVDs (or, Heaven forbid, going for a film-out)...man, if I had to go in and reequalize my system because someone optimized for crappy speakers...I'd be pissed.

(That being said, I DO use crappy computer desktop 5.1 speakers for the 5.1 mixdown. Because all I'm doing at that point is getting the spatial relationships right. The EQ and such for each channel is getting done on the Behringer 2031As first.)

Music man vs. Video man

I guess you are not doing music Dan, right? Just mixing video sound?

As far as music goes, I have always tested any mix I do on Mackie monitors on my car stereo and yes, sometimes I change things. Sometimes a minor change that makes very little difference to the sound as reproduced on quality NFMs makes a huge difference on crappy speakers.

Today I tested out a set of $32 speakers... not bad... brand is JS, very nice sub-bass.... mid/high are soso but at least the sound don't break.

And after the test...what? Go back in and change something because of it? That's insane. If you use the cheap set to determine what sounds "good", you might as well mix on them, too.

But y'all go ahead and do what you want.

Dan

I'm a little bit drunk, perhaps that's why I found this post incredibly funny (or perhaps it was your passport photo Dan). Anyways... you make sense. I'm sticking with my Genelecs for now.
