Thinking of buying this quartz kit here from imagewest. Was wondering if you folks recommend this set up? Mainly shooting interviews with hmc 40, two gh2s or two canon t2is.

Like: Price, dimmable.

Dislike: Burn hot, high electric costs...

Please if any recomendations for a solid florescent set up for under a k. That would be much great!

Thanks

As was the style, many years ago I lit interviews with umbrella lights. Many years ago I stopped. While nice and soft, the problem is there is so much spill that it is impossible to keep the light off the walls and everything else. The subject looks fine but the overall frame looks flat and boring because there is too much uncontrolled light on the background and everything else. There is little contrast in the scene and no attractive textures from light and dark.

Lots of people here can give you advice on good economical fluorescents for interviews. I use Kino Flos. I'd look very hard at those from one of the forum sponsors at www.coollights.biz because of their quality and price points. You'd then just need a couple of small tungsten heads for backlight and background light.

There are lots of great ways to do three and four point lighting for professional looking interviews. The least expensive very effective method I know of is taught here: http://www.film-and-video.com/001.html. I also highly recommend this DVD: http://www.warmcards.com/DVD_ILDVD.html
