I just downloaded a beta program that is suppossed to replace audition as an audio editor. It also is suppossed to create music. I haven't really played with it yet, but it looks basic and simple... just like me!

The reports of Auditions demise are greatly exaggerated

Nah, you're referring to the new beta called Sound Booth, right? It's a lower-end subset for those that don't want all the bell and whistles; you can participate in the Sound Booth forum if you'd like more info. Or listen to Bruce Williams "Building the Pod" #69 audiocast who discusses Sound Booth shortcomings, such as no multi-track editing. But Sound Booth will be great for folks that want a decent audio editor without the complexity of a high-end application.

Regards, Michael

Now that you mention it, I don't see the ability to multitrack. It also needs to have filters and effects. The program seems empty without them.

Adobe said in its annoucement that Soundbooth will replace Audition in the Video bundle but Audition will continue as their most advanced audio tool. As I understand it, Soundbooth is designed for those who want a basic audio tool that doesn't require them to become a sound engineer to use it. It will have more automated tools. I've downloaded the beta but have been too swamped to really give it a go.

That's ironic, because I always thought Audition (and CoolEdit before it) was one of the easiest to learn audio programs.

I gotta agree with you there. If you're interested, here's an article with an interview of the Adobe Product Manager. He explains how the two are positioned:

Here's one quote:

The limitation of Audition and similar applications, he says, “is that a lot of people who need to do audio work are video professionals, and Flash professionals, and other kinds of visual professionals who don’t happen to be audio professionals.”
