Any Workaround for Glitch from Canon XH A1 HDV Footage

Hello All,

I am so bummed, to say the least. I use an XH A1 and taped a band using a Sony DVM 63 HD tape (since day one) only to discover that I've got a glitch about 10 minutes into their 50 minute performance. I just let the tape roll and captured an almost perfect set for them. The glitch is in a slow pan shot between singers, and affects the video as well as the audio. I captured the footage using my G5 iMac in iMovie (never any problems) when I discovered the glitch because the footage was split into two clips rather than the one long clip I was expecting to see.

A friend of mine captured the audio through a mixer, recorder and then to my XLR inputs on the camera, so I've got a perfect audio track on a separate DVD ROM that he burned for me. With that said, can anyone think of a way to smooth the transition between the two clips considering that I'm missing some frames? I'm going to use my friend's Final Cut Pro 6 and his Mac to do this.

Luckily, this wasn't a paid assignment, but the band is so talented that I wanted them to have a "showcase" video to promote themselves. The footage looks and sounds top-notch otherwise.

As a side note: the camera has very low hours of use (maybe 6-7 one hour tapes that have been through it), so can anyone recommend a tape cleaner? Like I said, I've only used Sony tapes.

Thanks a bunch,
Jack

P.S. I've dumped the footage twice into the iMac and the glitch is in the same spot each time. I've also looked at the footage through the camera's LCD, and the glitch is there. I'm certain the glitch is on the tape, unfortunately.

1) lay down the good mix from your DVD-ROM

2)find a shot of the drummer that somewhat matches the beat

boom! nobody will ever know.

Yeah... I don't really see what the problem is here? One tiny "glitch", and you can't find a way to simply edit around it?

I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just trying to understand what you mean exactly? cut out a few frames, bring it back on the right beat, and no one will even know... probably not even the band.

Hi Guys,

I can see why there'd be some confusion. I should have stated that I was trying to capture the band all in ONE take with no edits. That was going to be the footage I provided. Of course, now I'll have to create an edit and cut to something else, but I was simply trying to avoid this. I was just wondering if there was a "smooth" way of joining the glitched areas together. Yes, I'll lay a piece of audio over that spot, but what about the video portion? Since it's a moving pan shot, there's an obvious jump in the frame. I guess I'll know this weekend when my friend and I get together for some editing what will come of this.

Thanks for any more input,
Jack

Luckily the glitch happened in a camera move. Gives you more options to fake it. Add an effect to the pan (speed up, blur, crash optical zoom etc) to hide the edit. Good luck.

Good ideas...

Good ideas...

Thanks, Cyclone. Yeah, I'll have to experiment with an effect to see if that can work. I appreciate the ideas.
