Any tips on image permission?

In my research I've stumbled across some images online I'm interested in using in my film. Anybody have any advice on getting permission to use them? If the image is older would it come down to website as oppsed to photographer? Didn't know if I should just write and ask or if there was a more proper method.

I would never ever use photos that I found on the Internet. You need to do your research and find the copyright holder of the image otherwise you could be in deep trouble.

I did a documentary that required some extra picture material. We happened to come across just what we needed on a particular website. We contacted the owner of the website who owned the original photo's and asked permission to use them. They gave us permission in writing and they sent us very nice high rez copies to boot... In return we credited them.. All you need to do is ask. But do get permission, unless you are sure it is in the public domain.
