HI all...

editing for weeks now... and thinking....... WHAT if my hard drive crashes???

I've got 4/300GB drives.... film clips on most of them. (70+ hours footage)

I think PPRO auto saves... but where? and WHAT is it saving??

Thanks,
Darryl

Assuming you are using Pro1.5 - do a search for "Project Manager" in the Premiere Help file. It will be your new best friend.
The auto save feature kinda sucks. It does save in a way. It's saving to a seperate project file with the same name followed by a number.
Example: File name is Pimpdaddy
It will save a file named Pimpdaddy01, Pimpdaddy02,Pimpdaddy03 up to however many you have set in your preferences. Once it reaches the end, lets say you have it set to save 7 copies and it saves Pimpdaddy07, the next time it autosaves it will erase ver. Pimpdaddy01 and start over again.
It's kind of stupid because if you have to recover the file, you can't tell which one was last. that's why I always just keep the number of saves set to 1 and it constantly over-writes the same one. If I have to recover, it's a no brainer.

I believe it saves to C:My Documents/Adobe/Premiere/.......

Hope that helps....

Thanks.... I saw that file w/the auto saved files as you said.... but...

those files represent my edit decesions...correct? and if so, if my original clips are lost, then those decesions mean nothing?
OR is PPRO 1.5 saving the edited peices of footage in a seperate file?
...MMmm.... the project manager looks interesting... I better read up....

I can save only the edited clips I want and dump the rest?? That would be nice....

thanks again.... back to the books for me....

Eh, this may just be me, but when I start a project, I put everything for that project in a folder on my RAID. Let's say I'm doing a project for Mansfield University...I have a folder called Mansfield Unversity. If I'm doing several projects for them, there will obviously be other folders inside there. Lot's of times I'll need to make changes in the future to a project so I need to keep the original project file and clips but I don't have room to keep them on my RAID drive.

My solution is a case mounted swappable hard drive enclosure.

I just buy 250 gig hard drives to put in it and when I have one full I take it out, label it, put it back in the box and throw it on the shelf, and buy another one to fill up.

Here is a link to Newegg's page of them...they're all very similar. Some are SATA and some are IDE, so just make sure you buy one that is compatible with your system.

Good luck!

The absolute best thing you can do to backup a project is how you do the first thing you do when you start working on it.

The project files, graphics, music, sound effects - all these can easily fit on a CD. It's the video footage that takes up so much space.

If you batch capture your clips with machine control, you don't need to back up that footage. If you need to restore a project, just load the project files from wherever they are archived, and recapture your source footage.
