Any tips/advice for riding horse competitions?

I have an opportunity to get involved with horse shows and competitions, e.g. showing, riding, jumping, etc. Styles include both Western and English for both children and adults.

I've never shot something like this, though I've seen some shows on TV, so I have a sense of "standard" framing, but little idea of what pitfalls may be unique to such an event. The major competition could include upwards of 100 competitors.

All other tips/advice/warnings are invited. What recommendations/suggestions do others have?

When videotaping horses a good tripod is a must! It may not look like the horses are moving fast all of the time, but believe me they move faster than you might think. I shot a dressage competition/reality show for 1 month last year. Also be aware that you will need to be very sensitive to the horses, meaning no running along the sidelines while they are in the area. If you spook a horse it can be very dangerous. We had a jib for our final competition, but we were very limited as to what we could do with it because the judges are VERY strict when it comes to the horses and safety. I'd suggest practice before you book the job if possible. It takes a little practice to get the right framing and moves to cover them as they go. But, it can be lots of fun too. And they look great, especially if you are outdoors and have a beautiful day. A few other things we played around with were really cranking the shutter speed. We shot lots of footage with the shutter at 500. I know sounds a bit over the top. But, when we slowed down CU's in post it looked nice. Also it made the sky a great color blue. Good luck and enjoy it.
