Any suggestions to improve the lighting?

Hi folks,

I did a short experimental movie to test some stuff including light, I wish to have some advise on making the light look more filmic, I just feel it looks so video'sh.

Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

Thanks!

Have you ever read an issue of American Cinematographer? If you have you would know how much can go into getting a super polished look like in a feature film. It can be quite difficult to on a small budget. I think one big thing I noticed throughout the movie is a general lack of backlighting. The actors hair and shoulders always disappeared into the background. Rim lighting can help give the same dark feel while still showing where the actors are in the shot. (keep it subtle though) I really liked how you incorporated most of the lights into the actual set of the movie! I'm sure it gave you a lot more freedom to work in. Another good piece of advice, though this applies more to daytime shots, is keep the light motivated. Essentially, don't put a light on a set where it wouldn't normally come from in real life. Films usually have soft light for interior shots, and I think one thing throwing this move off is the lack of variety of locations and lighting. It all takes place in a very dimly lit house. If you could have some backstory that would allow for shots during the day, or another location, it would help to round out the look of your film.
