Any suggestions for XLR to PC input (usb?)

I was wondering what people do to record narration and what people use to record an XLR mic to PC?

My friend who is a musician uses all sorts of fancy equipment to record on his mac (logic), but I couldn't justify spending thousands on gear like that.

There are a number of USB mics out there that are used mostly for podcasts that should work for this. You can also get a small mixer that has a USB out and use a conventional mic.

Most NLE's have a way to record VO and such. If yours doesn't then you will need some software. If you bought the mixer as above, it probably came with a basic recording app. Also REAPER is I believe cross platform and free or close. I'm sure there is cheap PC software for recording I just don't know what's out there.

You could also just go over to your friend's place.

Which mic are you referring it. It matters because the approach will be different if you require phantom power.

Your budget will determine what you get.

I know some podcasters that use Garageband on the Mac. I've used Audacity, which is free for both mac and pc. For basic VO recording and editing, it's quite capable. You can get a pretty basic pro tools LE set up these days for pretty cheap.

The best option is the CEntrance MicPort Pro.

This will enable you to use any mic. you want and even supply phantom power. It will enable proper high bit-rate recording at 24/96 you want and also incorporates a decent headphone amplifier.

I record to a Zoom H4. The thing about recording directly to the PC is the fan noise from the computer. At any rate, an H4 or H4n can be used as an interface. Connect the XLR mic(s) to the H4, then connect the H4 to the PC.

Heck, you could even use the built in mic's on the H4n. I've been recorded for podcasts by other people when I was a sound designer, and they just used the thing as a handheld mic. Ended up sounding pretty good for what it was.
