Any suggestion on how to fix this? (View Link)

Hi All, Can you look at this frame grab and tell me what the issue is?

http://www.progressivedesigns.ca/roonie.jpg

I've imported and edited an entire sequence and when I output it using Compressor I get some frames that look "interlaced" (I don't know if that's the correct term, I'm referring to the offset in horizontal lines when there's quick movement, in this case his hands) my guess is that it's because I shot using the PRESET 1 on the DVX which I beleive is 60i. Is it normal for my final output to have frames that look like this? If not, are there any suggestions on how I can fix this?

thanks SO much for your attention,

If your footage is in 60i, it seems logical that you get this kind of issue. What we see on your picture is just one half of the image. 60i means 60 half frames per second, as you must know.

If you want your final output progressive, there is a built in de-interlace filter in FCP, but the process is a bit destructive — you're gonna lose some spacial quality to resolve the temporal issue, especially if there's a lot of movement in your film.

But a simple question comes to my mind : if progressive is what you want, why the heck didn't you shoot progressive in the first place ? This is done in real time without any alteration of the picture. It's a transparent process and that's why our baby cam is loved for.

F1 is 60i. The i stands for interlace. For 24p (progressive, non-interlaced) use F5 and for 24pa (progressive advanced) use F6. You can also set it to shoot 30p.

Note that interlacing isn't a bad thing depending on what you want. If you after 'normal' video then this is it. When played back on real video (DVD, TV, etc) it will look fine. On the computer, especially if you pause a frame, you may see the interlace but not usually when viewing as real video.
