Any Sound Devices mixers out there?

I have a post in Marketplace, but thought I would check in here as well. I'm in search of a well maintained, used Sound Devices mixer, either a mix pre or a 302. Does anyone have one that they would like to sell off? Shooting a doc. project this month and could really use a quality field mixer (at a fair price). Thanks, everyone.

Good luck. I was looking to get a new SD headphone amp last week and was told Sound Devices is waaaay on back order. Seems the popularity of the 744t is causing a shortage in all things Sound Devices (at least this is what my retailer told me). I was told the waiting list is over 8 weeks now.

Maybe David Fisk has some inside info but this is what I was told (I very well could have been mislead).

So even if you find a used one (few people want to part with these great mixers), it is not likely to sell for much under the new price. Maybe you could rent.

hey, correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the little 2channel shure field mixer just a re-branded mixpre? i haven't had one to a/b or disassemble, but they're definitely identical on a superficial level. maybe, given shure's global manufacturing prowess, you'd have moire luck tracking down one of those? i think it's like fp-24 or something. (which is misleading, btw- it's not like it's a 2 channel 4 buss mixer or anything.)

I'm drawn to the mixpre for its size, rugged case, and interface layout ( I just like the way the knobs and switches are made/placed). I've thought about a FP-24, but just don't like it as much. I've never heard that they have the same internal components. I'd like to hear that confirmed, because that doesn't register correct with me. Maybe. I don't know.

the shure to which i'm referring appears to have the identical case, knob layout, meters, etc. that's why i suspect it's the same thing. otherwise, the superficial resemblance of the 2 units is so identical that it would appear that some patent infringement would have to be taking place. i'm not talking about the 3-channel shure (which i don't like, and which doesn't sound near as good as the mixpre.) here's the one i'm referring to-

Yeah it is the same mixer. I believe SD worked a deal back before they had built a name for themselves. Problem is twofold, first the Shure version is more expensive (paying for the name), second since SD still makes the actual mixer, the back order situation will most likely be the same.

The 3 channel Shure mixers (FP-33) is a really good mixer. I still use one as a backup. If you can't find an SD before your production, you might be able to find a FP-33 or the earlier FP-32A used at a good price.

cheers

Yeah, finding a used SD mixer is like finding the holy grail. I searched for a few months a while back. Given up now...

Sound Devices is mega backordered on everything right now. I'm waiting for 442's, and probably won't see any for several weeks, same with 302's, and mix pre's. They didn't expect the sales of mixers to ramp up with the recorders. I have never seen anyone sell anything sound devices used. They are still kinda new. You may be able to find a used cooper CS104, or Shure FP33.

I remember that in a recent post (90 percent certain it was Dave). I think, and if I am wrong please correct David, what Dave was saying in that past post was that dollar for dollar, a SD mixer is a far better deal. I believe they are roughly the same price per channel, with the Shure being about $100 more. With that choice, you take the SD everytime.

On the otherhand if you are looking at picking up a mixer in the $600 range you could get a 2 channel Mixpre OR a used 3-channel FP33, the Shure is the way to go (IMHO). For most, the advantage of the 3rd channel outweighs the other advantages of a SD mixer.

Also if you are in a position like Mezzanine is, a Shure mixer is still a fine choice if you can't get ahold of a SD one.

I would go with a new PSC DV Promix 3 ($500) over a used (or new) FP33. I've been pretty happy with the one I have.
