Any rules for subtitling? punctuation at end of title?

I'm currently subtitling my film and can't figure out whether I should put periods at the ends of sentences when the subtitle also ends there. It seems like visual clutter and not entirely necessary, but on the other hand, it could also mean that the sentence continues. Any rules on this?
My specific purpose is translation btw, not necessarily for hearing impaired.

From what I've seen, it seems to me they do use ending punctuation. If a line is going to carry over to the next subtitle, they seem to like to end it with "..." I don't know that's a hard and fast rule or anything, just an observation.

I will say that a few times I've seen subtitles which had no period at the end, and it was always distracting to me -- just as a misspelled word would be. But maybe that's just me.

These remarks are for both caption and 'translation' subtitling.

I'd recommend putting at least periods. Most other punctuations are usually dropped. I have on occasion seen 'quotes', when a speaker is in fact 'quoting' others... but that's rare...

Fortunately for most 'narrative' work there is only one actual speaker at a time, unless of course... someone decided not to use that usual convention...
