Any Real World Testing of Apple VS PC

Avid does rule and in regards to PPro 1.5 & Matrox, be sure to go to 1.5.1 update - sooo many fixes on adobe's side of the matrox/adobe partnership. My PPro 1.5.1 Matrox x.100 setup is quite stable. Run Intel motherboards, intel processors, and for crying out loud, dont use it to check you hotmail e-mail - get a mac mini for that. BTW it edits 24p normal just fine (mtx x.100 & PPro 1.5.1)

You are so right about this update. Since I've upgraded to 1.5 then the subsequent 1.51 update, I too have worked with minimal trouble. Day and night difference between PPro 1.0.

I'm extremely happy with Adobe, and their entire operation. I think they should deliver fixes a bit faster, but I think Premiere Pro is great. And the fact that I can easily use After Effects, Photoshop, Audition, and Encore DVD in conjunction with it without any hassle is great. I have had two seperate people in the last two days try to convert me to a Mac environment, but their macs kept crashing on them! I told them that macs aren't supposed to crash, but they couldn't explain it. I have been using PCs to edit video for over 7 years. Every once in a while, I'll get a crash, but with the money I save using PC, it doesn't really bother me. Peace.

I've used Mac & FCP since v.2.0 with a Raid setup and an Aurora IgnitorX card.
It has never let me down & never missed a deadline (for movie trailers)

I've used Avid's before, that, but honestly... the downtime from crashes etc... was horrible compared to the Mac.

The new Vegas looks cool from what I saw at NAB.

But seriously... especially for the new Tiger OS... you can utilize 8gigs(16 if you find 2gig sticks) of RAM straight to FCPHD5.0 with the 64bit OS. Before FCPHD maxed out at 4gigs.

I played with an 8gig G5 2.5 for a good hour cutting, filtering, rendering, changing stuff, exporting, and it was screaming fast without any crashes on HD captured footage.

Personally, I think the topic of the amount of crashes between a PC and a Mac is one that you can't compare apples to apples. It's primarily how the system is configured and hardware compatibility, which will be different on every computer. Granted, it seems that video is more vulnerable to problems on the PC, based on what I hear. I must admit, I hated OS 9 (which is the last Mac I worked on), it crashed constantly-- haven't ever worked in 10, which I hear is much more stable. Now with Tiger, I'm hoping Apple has leaped even further forward with the stability issue.

From a lot of the articles I've read, due to DV bandwidth bottlenecks, extra RAM doesn't help a whole lot. Anything above 1-1.5 gig is wasted money?? Processor is where you want to invest the money. As well, hard drive speeds can actually become overkill once again due to this same bottleneck. If someone knows something (for fact) different, please let us know.

But, WaveRiderXIX... I myself cannot wait to try out a twin 2.7 G5 and play a bit, not to mention checking out some of the stuff FCP can do.

I run a 2x2.5 g5 with motion, fcp,and dvd studio and i can tell you those apps are highly dependant on ram. infact the rt speed in motion is 95% dependant on ram. The rt in fcp is the same way. you could use the whole 8 gig if you could afford it. I went from 2 to 3 and can see a big change.

bigkingcountry & Kito--
Thanks for the input. I must say, I questioned the RAM thing myself. Good to know the additional RAM helps.

While I hate PC's, really the only thing you need to do is install some decent virus software and firewall. Since I've done that I have not had a virus on my PC. Maybe I'm lucky but it works pretty damned well.

Disclaimer: I work for Symantec, but am no company lackie, and I'm a Ghost developer not an AV developer.

I think you were just lucky. On top of the spyware that I was able to erase manually, my computer got a newform of spyware which is activated when you use. . . . . *guess what*: SPYBOT!!!!! Microsoft Anti-Spy Beta, of course doesn't detect anything (what a surprise). Does Symantec know about this?
