Could someone recommend the best way to create mattes for FCP in PScs2.
Also wonered if anyone has thought of a way to use the afx. files in Photographic Edges as mattes, I mean that would be 10,000 mattes to choose from...... Just a thought.
That's kind of a generic question. You do whatever it takes to make a matte that you think looks good. You could paint them from scratch like Ryan Church. You could draw them in Maya in 3D. You could doctor a photograph in Photoshop. It really depends on the shot.
I'll tell you this, for naturalism, make sure the lighting of the matte matches the lighting of your FG. Also, make sure that the lens focal properties are close. If it is a digital snap, you may want to consider adding some slight grain or a very slight blur so as to not make it look quite like a perfect 10 megapixel snap with a crappy lens. Also, this goes without saying, but, match colors, etc...
I've seen some really REALLY bad mattes done in PS with just digital snaps. This short called SEVEN SWANS. Look it up, then beware.
