I have to say that film simply looks different when compared to footage coming off from RED or 35mm adaptor + HD setups. I just shot a feature with G35 + HPX170, footage looks great, but when I intercut it with 8mm footage (transfered to uncompressed HD), even when the 8mm is not as sharp, the feel, texture and color of film is just different. Even when the depth of field is DEEP, film still feels like film. Comparatively, the shots with shallow depth of field in my film still feels digital no matter.
I also recently saw a movie shot on RED and transfered to 35mm for theatrical distribution, it has certain segments that are intercut with S16mm footage, and again the S16 segments stand out distinctly for me. Yes it is a tad softer than the RED footage, but again, its the texture of the film grain and its inherent softness that is just inreplacable, no matter what kind of digital setups.
Again, its my personal opinion ^^ If I have the money, I will still go for celluloid because I love the feel of it.
