The title says it all. I tried to get the one recommended by Jared over at DV Video.com but when I called to order it they said it has been discontinued and no "battery" powered unit exists....despite it still being listed and described on the site.

Anyone know of any others?

thanks!

The HVX USB and Firewire ports do not supply any power. Any drive would need to be self-powered. Besides, the HVX doesn't control or offload to USB devices, only to firewire devices.

I was hoping that the usb port could power the drive, and the firewire port would be the transfer cable. But as you said, the usb port supplies no power, but that drive does have a fw port as well Barry. Hmm time to look some more.

The USB port on the HVX is one of those mini-size connectors, and I'm not sure if it's even possible to use a port like that to power a device. I'm pretty sure only host devices can supply power over the USB bus, and the HVX's USB port is not capable of host duties.

After looking for years, it seems the only battery powered hdd option is an ipod. Now on panasonic's site it states that it handled dvcprohd quite well. Any idea on how well it would do its job Barry? Also, I know that only the older ipods have a fw port.

Don't know, don't have one, haven't tried. I would expect the ipod to be a quite slow performer. I don't think the hard disk in an ipod is optimized for speed, so I'd expect it to be rather sluggish in offloading 4 or 8 gigabytes at a time.

Bah nm the ipod, only the first and second generation ipods have the fw port and the largest size those were made in was a 20gb model.

It's looking more and more like I am going to have to make something to fit my needs. I have a firewire portable drive that takes a single AC adapter that is 12v dc and 1.6 amp. I'm sure it doesn't draw 1.6 but it is capable of that. I have rigged up battery packs before that would power a wireless unit and a small mixer with a small 12 volt battery. I may have to do that again.

Bummer.........

Even if they do exist, they're impossible to find (ipod).
icicle22......That's what I was thinking, just buying an external seagate fw unit and finding a battery pack that would power it, i'm sure it exists.
