Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

Wow, those are more than I thought they would be. I bought mine at a surplus store (Scooter wheels though) for about 1.50 a piece.

Yard sales...but you'll have to take them off the skates. :-)

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

You can find replacement wheelsets are stores like Sears. They are usually low quality sets but are normally fine for indy film tools.

Hmm, here's a quick search on Sears:

Kryptonics Aggressive Wheel Set 55mm $29.99
This Kryptonics 55-mm aggressive inline skating wheel set includes 8 long-lasting wheels and bearings designed for street and ramp aggressive skaters.

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

Semi-soft rollerblade wheels are much quieter than what has traditionally been used for years in the past - skateboard wheels.

Rollerblade wheels do have one problem. They tend to squeak a tiny bit when used on curved track. Nothing that a little oil or powder wont fix but thought you should know.

The hardness of rollerblade wheels is represented by a number followed by a "A" (Ex. 89A). Anything over about 90A is fairly hard but not as hard as a skateboard wheel. I havent tested alot of wheels so I couldnt tell you the ideal hardness but I have used 90A wheels and was pretty happy.

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

hmm, i got a $45 simon gift card i might be able to use at sears, saves me some cash, so you guys recommend rollerblade wheels over skateboard wheels?

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

just to clarify, both skate board and roller blade wheel manufacturers use the same "A" rating on the wheel hardness. it's just that most skateboard wheels tend to be about 96A - however you can get "old school" wheels that clock in at around 76A. that way you won't have to worry about your track sitting perfectly on the tapered roller blade wheel since skate board wheels are cylindrical. although expect to pay top dollar for those skate wheels.

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

I just bought some rollerblade wheels at Sports Authority. About $60 for sixteen wheels. I'll let you know how they work out.

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

What are they for? A dolly? I would be worried about the quality of bearings that came with those wheels. But they may serve your purpose just fine.

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

Abec3 bearings are a very smooth rolling bearing, keep them clean like any bearing and they work great for a dolly.

I do recommend the rollar blade wheel over skate board wheel personally.

I'm building a monopod into straight track dolly right now, I'll post pics once it's done.

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

Make sure to get "aggressive" rollerblade wheels because they tend to have a very flat profile just like skateboard wheels. Senate makes great quality wheels that often include good bearings AND affordable pricing too. Remember the more wheels the smoother it will glide over the joints in the track but make sure you make your dolly work on curved track as well. The geometry changes as you go from straight track into curved track so you cant just slap some wheels on a board and hope that it will work perfectly. Take measurement carefully before you build. Good luck.

Re: Any place to get some skateboard wheels?

how about some pictures of people's skateboard/rollerblade wheel dollie setups?

i'm out of town right now but will post my setup when i get back.

i have two wheels per axel and they go horizontally with a spacer to allow it to straddle the pvc pipe at the proper placing.

i went with double axels all the way around sort of like a dualie pickup rear end with two sets of dualie wheels/axels at each of the four corners.

with my next version i think i'll put a double set of axels in the middle as well so i will six places where wheels touch the pvc evenly distributed.

the problem i had wasn't squeaking so much as the vibraration carrying itself through to the mic.
