any of you SATA users...?

I put together a new system, with a single WesternDigital Caviar 250GB SATA drive as the video storage...

But no matter what I try, I can't get the system to recognize the drive (BIOS or the OS). Has anyone here had this problem with their SATA'(s)?

Searching the net, I've found ALOT of people have had the exact same problem! (though people on this site highly recommended SATA) I've tried everything, and recieved tech feedback from seeingly everyone.

I'm thinking now of just switching to some lame-ass regular IDE 7200rpm HD and put up with the slow seek time, I'm so sick of this ****! (here I am, about to start new projects, need to storyboard etc., and I'm stuck worrying over this bullshit egghead crap that has nothing whatsoever with creativity or inspiration or anything!) I never should've bothered with SATA!

(time to go vent with a beer, or Dr Phil)

Peace!

Well, not knowing what kind of system you're designing (though I'm gathering it's a Windows machine) it's hard to say. For me, running a G5, the SATA drive that came with the box has been just fine, and it took me all of about 5 seconds to add a second 300 GB drive so thus far I've been thrilled with it.

This one sounds like an issue for a PC bulletin board?

Yeah, post your specs, because I just installed the very same drive last week on a WinXP machine. The only thing I had to do was enable it in the control panel->admin tools->Computer Management.

I'm running 2 SATA drives on a PC that I built myself... no problems whatsoever... shoot us your specs.

you might want to check your bios/intergrated peripheral/on chip IDE configuration. I am using a MSI 865pe board and when i installed a 200g WD I have to enable it in the above bios setting before XP can detect it. hope it helps

You know what, nitsel is right. Now I remember that my Dell has two SATA connectors, and the second one is disabled by default. I had to go into setup and enable it as well. Sorry, my bad.

Yes, the second one is disabled by fault. I've had this problem too when I was putting my PC together, and had to ask my friend to come over and take a look. He was able to hook up my second SATA HD. I will get back to this thread with more info once I ask him.

Guys:

Gigabyte motherboard (GA-K8NSP) with 4 SATA ports (2 controlled by nVidia nForce3 drivers, 2 by Sil3112 drivers)
Athlon 64 3000
1GB DDR
Radeon 9600XT
Seagate system HD drive (Win2K, dual boot, "Gaming" and "Filmmaking" partitions)
Western Digital SATA drive 2500JD (250 GB) (((this is what I cannot detect)))

Vegas and DVDA2 (and occassionally AE) and obviously, 24p DVX footage!

Okay, yes, I've set the BIOS to "BASE," which apparently means 1 drive, instead of a RAID config. I've tried ALL drivers (RAID, BASE, OEM, etc.), as well as all the SATA ports on the motherboard. I've intalled the drivers through the OS, as well as the "F6/3rd party SCSI drivers" option, and I've done this with 2 different system hard drives (had a spare IBM drive laying around). Oh, and I can feel the SATA spinning and generating heat.

At no time have I ever been able to detect the SATA; not in BIOS, POST, or in the OS, or with Western Digital's "lifeguard" utility.

All I can think is:
1. the motherboard is bad
2. the SATA is bad
3. they're not compatible

Everything is brand new. I'd have returned the SATA, but I was traveling, and my Newegg 30days ran out.

thank gents!
