any new insight on calibrating odyssey7?

like the title says, have an odyssey7 and like others found it to be a little green. have tried the setting suggested by one of the other users on here, where green is reduced to 96%, still a little green. "so reduce the green more, jackass!". yes, very helpful. has anyone found settings that produce a more accurate representation of what cam sees? thanks.

ps still have older firmware (the last 4.whatever version) for a few more days til my adapter comes.

I hooked my 7Q+ up to two other calibrated monitors and eyeballed it to get it in the same ballpark. Ended up with RED at 100%, GREEN at 96%, and BLUE at 96%. Boosted color saturation too. Works well enough for me that there are no surprises when i get it into the cutting room.

Each color channel also has a bias adjustment, which shifts how much the color gain setting alters the highlights v. the darker part of the signal. This helps prevent (for example) high green gain causing green shadows and magenta skies.

Note that you will need a newer firmware version in order to access these controls.

Thanks. Just updated to latest firmware. Zak do you know what color sat setting # you adjust to? I ran bars from an EX1 to it thinking to calibrate to those the way you would an old school CRT monitor, and, putting it in blue/monochrome, it appears to already be calibrated.

Also, hope you don't mind me hijacking my own thread to ask about a few features on the new firmware. For some reason "zoom" is greyed out, doesn't respond when I touch it. Why would this be? have an EX1 hooked up to it via a Canare SDI cable. Also, zebra doesn't seem to be on for some reason (though is on in the settings on the Odyssey). When I touch it I see the greyscale bar at the bottom, but no zebras actually appear on the image even when they should. Can't find anything in manual about why that would be, sure I'm missing something simple.

Not sure why this would be. Please try cycling power and if that does not work, reloading the new firmware. If you are still encountering difficulty please contact cdsupport@convergent-design.com.

OK, got it. Zoom issue was 'cause I had EX1 set to 720p for a project, I guess it doesn't think it needs to zoom with a 720p signal coming in 'cause you're already at 1:1? Weird, though--you could still want to use 2:1 or any of the other settings for checking focus or something. The zebras, I still don't know why. . .tried hitting that "reset" button, when it reset, they came on! I was able to set them, everything worked fine.

Our Pixel Zoom system is based on a 1080 platform, so it doesn't have the math for digging into a 720p signal. It would get blocky awfully quickly.

Some of the settings when loading new firmware are a little odd depending where you had them set before the new firmware was loaded. Simply hitting reset should clear them up.

ah. that makes sense if its based on previous settings. did you guys get that issue worked out where a 5dM2 signal wouldnt display when the cam was recording? or is that a no go cause the issue was on the cam side? also, what about a custom zoom (because, again, with the 5dM2, 1:1 shows letterbox bars, but 2:1 is TOO tight. something in between or customizeable would be great)

We do not support this mode on the 5DM2. Although there are many of them out there, the 5DM2 is no longer manufactured and it is the only camera that ever switched its output in this unique way. In determining what formats we would and would not support and the associated development time for such support, we determined that most users of a 5DM2 would likely already have a monitoring solution. A monitor/recorder such as the Odyssey7 would also likely not be as important to such users as the 5DM2 does not output a clean signal for recording.

Our zoom is based on a direct and simple math which is why the zoom ratio amounts are predetermined. Any in-between zoom ratios would result in aliasing in the image as there would be fractional enlargements of pixels. Unfortunately the scaling in the 5DM2 output does not align with such clean math.

Sorry, just now revisiting this thread. Can't fault your logic, still a little bummed though.

As to the main thrust of this thread, any users just through experience/eyeballing, gotten their Odysseys closer to "accurate" through contrast/brightness/saturation tweaks? I was working with a 5DM3 yesterday, noticed the LCD image on the cam looked more saturated and contrastier than the Odyssey. Things that would look hot on LCD (with histogram backing this up) would look pretty "mellow" on Odyssey. . .paper on a table, highlight on white hair, etc. Throughout the day I played with Odyssey trying to make it match closer to the LCD ("NO YOU FOOL! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE OTHER WAY AROUND! ARRGGGGHGHGHGHGHGH!"). Well, yeah, maybe. Not my 5D and don't know if he'd tweaked the LCD settings, but my experience with that cam and the EX1 is that they're pretty trustworthy, compared to how footage looks when you go back home and view it on a larger computer screen, i.e. if it looks funky on LCD, you're gonna hate how it looks anywhere else too. Made the same mistake with an outdoor shoot a few months before. . .guy's light colored shirt was looking hot but within reason on Odyssey using an EX1, looked nuclear when I reviewed footage on computer. I realize we have proper exposure tools to evaluate this stuff but at some point you want to be able to eyeball it instead of looking at zebras and waveforms all the time. I don't expect the Odyssey to be 100% accurate but I'd like to get it to be "judgeable". Right now seems to flatten things out a little bit in terms of saturation/contrast/brightness (i.e makes you feel safer than you are). I bumped sat up to 120% or so, brightness and contrast to 110-115%, that got me a lot closer.
