Hey Team,
Lots of discussions around here lately about Oktavas/AKGs/Schoeps as Hypercardiod options. Anyone use the Sennheiser MKH-50 as their indoor boom mic? I know it's a Supercardiod instead of a Hyper, but I was thinking it might be a good indoor option to compliment the 416 I just bought from Oleg (Thanks again Oleg--- It's F-ing awesome! Can't wait to use it in the field on Friday! And yes, you packed it like a tank!).

So, any opinions out there on the MKH-50 in general, and maybe it's comparison to the Schoeps? I used the Schoeps for all interview work at the last studio I worked for, and it was great, but I've never heard the MKH-50.

I've never used it, but I heard that the mkh40 and mkh50 were the primary indoor mics on the recent Sean Penn movie filmed here in Portland, OR.

Interesting. Any word on how they performed?

I guarantee you there are a lot more feature films using the Schoeps MK41 than the Sennheiser MKH50 as the main boom mic.

if you already have experience using the mk41, then there is no question. The mkh50 will not give you better "sound". (based on usage by mixers).

Performance wise, they say it is less prone to RF and moisture compared to the mk41, but I have not experienced this. Soundwise I prefer the MK41 but does it even matter? Will editorial or the audience know what mic you are using?

Super and hyper are the same polar pattern just marketting term.

Ask yourself this, do you really need a MK41 or MKH50? Who really benefits from using these high end mics? You'll be surprised what a lot of episodic TV uses as boom mics.

the 50 is a nice mic, I don't think it has such a colour free off-axis polar response as the schoeps, but its definately more rugged IMO. it has the pad and cut switches on the mic which is nice.

its horses for courses - i'd say that in the uk there are more MKH's going round than Schoeps'.. certainly every hire facility I know only do MKH's. you can hire 30/40's 416's 50's the most easily out of everything, In scotland i've never even heard of a Schoeps for hire. (you can hire them more easily in england I think)

where did you reed it , there are more non schoeps then schoeps used in film industry :-))

the mkh is more nerrow pattern mic which works much better then the schoeps outside , it much quet mic as well , it has complitly different feel , it not worse or better then the schoeps .

that is quit wrong , the rf problems whith schopses until 2 years ago where amazing9 until the latest version of cmc-6) , the mkh series is much prone to rf exept the first models which where modificated by sennheiser
.
try to work with schoeps near zaxcom tx - then talk

enjoi the mic , i hope you will use it more then me :-)
about , the 50 if it match the sound , no its sound quit different , but that for about every mic you will compare to 416 ,
the only thing you have to be aware using the 50 on the boom , you need to close the switches , sometimes you can her the wind comming inside .
other wise very nice sounding microphone with more sharper pattern then the 41 .

I have not used an MKH 50 before but I've used the 416, MKH 60 and 70.

Personally, I prefer the MKHs for both indoors and outdoors but then again I used them with the old Fostex PD-4 against the 416 direct to an HVX so I might be comparing unfairly lol.

Nevertheless, the sound from the MKHs are great and since the 50 is from the same family, I reckon it'll sound great too.

My 2 cents, when in doubt...... just grab a good preamp! lol
