Any love for the Sony PCM-D50???

Hi, I looked through 15 pages and searched for info on the Sony PCM-D50. A few people mention they liked it in other recorder discussions. But there wasn't a Sony PCM-D50 thread that I could find. The words D50 and DCM were considered too short to search on...Anyway...

It looks like I will be getting either the SD 302 or MixPre and the reviews on other sites for the Sony PCM-D50 are pretty good. I have a friend who may be able to get me the Sony PCM for a pretty good price (she gets an employee discount). Or should I stick with the Marantz 661 or Fostex FR-2LE.

Any one use it for recording sound on films?

Anything else that Sony makes that should be considered for filmmaking? If I am gonna ask for her discount may as well get some other items if she is willing :)

Many thanks.

I like the PCM-D50. It has a nice battery compartment. You can load it up with 4 batteries and then remove the entire "sled" so it doesn't accidentially get kicked on in transit. It plain old uses 4 batteries, as opposed to some recorders that only use two. Some people see no MP3 recording as a downside. You usually have to get into iTunes or something else to move MP3 recordings to WAV before bringing into your editor anyways. It uses MEMORY STICK DUO instead of plain onld SDHC, which, if you don't own SDHC, you won't have to get a headache about getting SDHC cards from Walgreens or the new STEEL series from HOODMAN... There's a RYCOTE windscreen that pulls over it just great...

Yep, my D50 rocks, the onboard mics do a great job. I bought the addon 48volt supply (expensive and badly designed) and I had to make an aluminium tray or stand to carry both. It works well but I use the onboard mics a lot. The 120d is great for FX and with things like traffic you can do another take at 90d and mix 'em together to thicken it up.

And the D50 doesn't use much battery either .. I saw an interview with the designer back aways, looks like it was a labour of love for him.

The Sony 8G card wasn't released when the D50 came out, worth looking into that.

Cheers.

I own a D50 as well, has done a wonderful job for me on interviews, live music recordings and the occasional short film. Bomb proof build quality, you don't get anything better from Sony unless you're willing to pay about 4 times as much or more.
Can confirm, a single set of batteries seem to last forever and I didn't even buy extra memory cards as the built in memory can hold a few hours of recordings in the highest quality setting.
The only downside is that it doesn't have XLR inputs.

The low cuts are 150Hz and 75Hz, maybe the onboard mics don't like anything lower.

My druthers would be an off position and 40Hz for music. And who would set the limiter for 1 min?

Apart from those, it's a beautiful thing.

Cheers.
