I had previously thought of using a DVX for a feature-length project but now with the HVX out I think it'd be crazy not to use that. But doing that is going to be expensive. So I'm going to try to raise 40k by wowing people with my script and storyboards and fortitude and that it could be a tax break for them (1% of movie = $2k).
Alternatively I could try going in with 1 or 2 or 3 people to create a co-production company with a contract on terms of equipment use for each "company (person)" and buyout clauses. The idea is, projects will go on at different times, so each comapny/person can slot specific times to use the equipment when needed.
Thinking of budget:
1 cam and probably at least 2 4Gb cards (6500)
Need a used 15" G4 PB (1500)
250 GB external 7200 RPM drive to connect to laptop via firewire (300)
latest FCP (800)
2 Dell 2405 monitors (1600)
G5 desktop 2G RAM and probably 1TB Raid (6000)
Greenscreen (?)
tripod (1000)
mattebox (500?)
Self-Build dolly
Self-Build Jib Arm
[Perhaps add a 2nd HVX + lighting to equipment list or leave it up to individual to rent for their project]
Add the many individual expenses for any one project (talent, lunches, set design, rentals, etc.) and that's a lot of dough for 1 person
I'm not a hardware junky and although I enjoy shooting - this set-up is overkill for my nephew's birthday party or late night trists- I don't need this set-up 24/7 for myself
Now my main objective is completing my project. This may be true for others in North/Central FL. If someone wants out after their project they can get a portion of their $ back but lose rights to the equipment. All that will be spelled out in the contract.
It would be like a poorman's, or as we say "Indie", Dreamworks.
Maybe this is naiive. Maybe nobody would do this. I don't know.
If anyone in North/Central FL wants to shoot a project with this type of set-up but doesn't have a spare 30k, maybe knowing that 3 people will go in at 10k each is more feasible. Anyway, we'd obviously have to meet and discuss details further etc. And it's risky to try this I guess with a stranger, but I'm an idealist. Anyway, just a proposal. And I realize we'll have to meet probably several times before deciding to jump into this.
