Any Illustrator or Photoshop Lighting Templates Available?

Hi guys, I'm a big fan of using blocking diagrams and any previs material I can to help prep my crew for the shoot.

Recently while Directing a low budget short, I had a DP and Gaffer drop out last minute, due to a higher paying gig, and I don't blame them one bit. I had an idea of our lighting setup having gone over it with them in meetings, but had trouble communicating it during the choas of the shoot to the remaining crew.

Long story short, If I had my diagrams all setup like my blocking, it wouldn't have been a big deal.

Are there any solutions out there.

It may be overkill for what you're looking for, but FrameForge Pre-Viz Studio allows you to pre-visualize almost any aspect of production you could want; including actors, sets, cameras, dollies and cranes, and lights. You can spec out your camera(s) and see exactly what you'll see during production.

Cool. Yeah Frame Forge looks good, been thinking about purchasing. Sometimes all I need is a simple top down view of my set in Illustrator, which I usually just draw out. Maybe I'll create my own set of light props to move around if there is nothing available. Kind of like the diagrams you see drawn by hand in American Cinematographer.

Thanks for the feedback.

Sketch up is what I use. I teach a lighting class, and I encourage my students to use it as well. There's plenty of scale accurate models of dolly track, lights, stands, jibs, etc for free on the web. You can easily move between 2d top down and 3d space for virtual walk-thrus.

I would just make a few different symbols and make a legend at the bottom. Use your overhead diagram that you would use for your blocking and take all the blocking out. Then you have plenty of room to put your "lights" and the legend in. I wish I had this all already made, but...I don't know. Haven't had a big enough shoot where that has become necessary yet.

If you read American Cinematographer, there's plenty of good examples of this around. Not saying that sketchup doesn't work, but I just feel very comfortable with photoshop, so I'd probably do it in that.

Woops. Just read your last post. We are thinking one in the same.
