Any ideas how to do this?

I was wondering what you guys and girls think about how to best achieve this effect... the effect of things "growing" on screen. I can't seem to get it right.

Good examples of this are seen throughout this video by Stardust Studios (which is amazing stuff). Watch for the growing plants (and even the paint splatters, for that matter). Is this beyond AE?

Any ideas?

interesting effects..looks like the plants are drawn in maybe illustrator or something similar, maybe a 3d program, and then being revealed somehow in ae, popular effect for sure....also plants etc can be grown in ae using the old maya paint effects plug in....

It's layered up with video files (the flowers and the people) as well as illustrator images. The floral is revealed through masking I believe. That look is such a trend now. I wish I could figure out where it came/comes from.

Cool video. Besides some real timelapse flowers, there are animated illustrated flowers that are made with mask animation. Flash can do this to. The point is how much time it will take! The splatters might be a plug-in. Or achieved from a 3D application and exported flat solid. You never know how many tools might have been used for something

It's easy enough to do in AE you just need a strong sense of design. Its all illustrator artwork and some paint effects in AE some blurs and some motion tracking on peoples faces.

The most curious part of the video to me was that after the graphics were revealed/unmasked, the little individual pieces grow into place.

Do you think each part of the vector graphics were broken apart and animated separately (i.e. stems, leaves, etc)? Giving them properties of growth/scale as well as the masking techniques?

This is one of the most common questions I see on forums. This is done with the write-on effect used as a 'mask' to reveal another layer.

And yeah, all the parts are broken apart.. it's a real pain.

Jayse has a very good tutorial on this here:

Hell of a link. I saw that a while ago, and had forgotten about it.

Very good stuff. That has applications far reaching growth as shown as well.

Thanks dude.
