Any Help For a Guy Trying To Make A Website?

Hi guys. I know this may not be exactly the perfect section for this but i figured people here might be knowledgeable about this.

Basically I need to make my own website. Preferably in the next couple of weeks, and then I will need 3 different ones within the next couple of months.

Problem: I don't know what the hell I am doing. I know some basic HTML at best but that is it. I don't really understand how I would find a host etc. Or I am just starting to. Here is the thing. I learn very fast and this is a skill I would love to have. I feel crippled almost not knowing how to do this. I started researching and reading, like I normally do to learn about something, and I did that for about 4 hours on the internet. I have a better understanding in a sense I guess, but a better understanding of how darn hard this is going to be. And I have more questions if anything. Also, I didn't feel like reading about it for the next 2 days. But I need to get this done. So can anyone share some info that helped them? Thoughts, links, articles, cool websites, but mainly advice. The thing is, I don't have money. This website is for that - to make money. So it needs to be at least decent looking. I have an artistic eye and I like design so I think I can do a decent job whether I have to use a template or whatever. But I can't pay a web-designer thousands or even 500 bucks. I also am not going to use a free host because that is just not reliable for making money and I hear they can suddenly disappear etc.

So yeah... DVX users... any help? Thanks :cheesy:

What platform are you running, Windows or Mac? If Mac, then you can do some very nice sites with iWeb. I did mine using iWeb and it's very easy to create and maintain.

Cheers,

Hit a site that you dig. Copy it's html code by viewing it's source then start replacing images as you like. This si the best way to get started with basic html. You'll soon start to be able to resize images, add background audio, ect.

If you are going to look at a basic WYSIWYG like iweb, take a look at Rapidweaver as well.

If you are looking for a combined design and hosting solution you might want to check out squarespace.com. It looks like a quick to launch and reasonably priced service. Plus it's all web based so it doesn't matter which platform you are on.

If you don't know HTML, the best bet is to use a CMS with a template, and then you just need to worry about adding content instead of futting around with stuff that will never look right anyway.

There's a tonne of hosting services that provide a number of CMSs for just a few dollars a month with very generous bandwidth and space limits. I pay $20/month for a reseller package that lets me have as many sites as I want -- and every site (about 20 as of now) runs a CMS of some sort (either Drupal or Typo3 depending on what the site needs).

Wordpress is probably your best CMS bet -- you could be up and running in just a few hours.
