Any great Indie Sci-Fi films?

You guys know of any great Sci-Fi indie films? Not the 'indie' films because their insanely rich director/producer funded them (eg: Lucas), but films that are great and were shot on a budget the average man could make....

I hear Primer and Pi are great. Any others?

Thx

I like Primer and Pi. GREAT films. Check out The Quiet Earth. Don't really know if it qualifies as "indie" but am sure it didn't cost tens of millions to make.

Code 46.

Solaris (the original must be considered indie, even if Soderbergh's re-make isn't).

Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell

Firefly (but I saw it at a festival and don't know when the hell they're releasing a DVD...but I"ll be first in line to buy one)

Well, here's the thing. There are no "great" indie sci-fi films. There are good ones. But there are no great ones. So there's a little challenge. Go out and make the first great indie sci-fi film. I think that since Pi is hip with the "If I don't totally understand it, it must be great" crowd, that people mistake that movie for great. But I think it drowns under its own lofty ideas.

I'll throw a title out there, however. It's not necessarily indie sci-fi, but it's definitely overlooked sci-fi. The Thirteenth Floor, which got lost in the beheamoth of what was The Matrix. They both opened the same weekend I believe, and that movie got lost in the shuffle. But I saw it later and thought it had some really great ideas and quite a complex storyline. I think Phillip Seamor Hoffman is in it. So him alone is worth checking it out. Good stuff!

I've been wanting to see Code 46. I'll do some research on the others. Thx!

The question was subjective..... what indie films are great to you? Thanks for suggesting The Thirteenth Floor. I've been wanting to see that, but needed a nudge in that direction....

I would think great "indie sci-fi" would be MORE about story and LESS about visuals. "Similo" is long on the latter but quite short on the former.

I disagree, Similo has more story than 99% of the films I've seen here or anywhere else on the web. It has subtext, subtle performance, a character goal, a (well hidden) late plot reveal - and an ultimate sense of story irony and pathos. It also presents a credible universe, boasts nice cinematography, good art direction and is well edited. These things are conspicuously absent from most shorts. I often find that shorts that are too well crafted tend to get the lazy hack put-down that they lack substance.

Care to share your definition of what constitutes a good story?
