Any filmmakers from Los Angeles? Help on something

Hey, I was only wondering if someone that has filmed in Los Angeles has run into any trouble filming without a permit. Is one needed? I usually film in NY but in NY there's an optional permit that allows permission for a camera, tripod & audio equipment for free. That's all the equipment I have/need too. I can't seem to find anything of the equivalent in Los Angeles. Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks

I have been on shoots that have gone the guerrila route.....some have been shut down by the police others were able to finish before they showed up.

It all depends on a few things:

Location
Size of crew,
and what is happening in the scene

Technically, if you are shooting "for profit" or hope to make a profit, then you need a permit....period. Welcome to LA....the land of film-making. Cops here are not stupid. If they see a crew, audio guy, someone holding a bounce, a camera on a tripod......you have a target painted on your back. It depends on how busy they are with other things.

PM me.......maybe I can assist, I have established a relationship with LAPD and LASO...

Ironic that is.

Anyway, thanks for weighing in, appreciate it. Crew is only going to be 3 total for out on the streets, so thankfully we'll have at least that on our side.

Leave the camera truck engine on and wear good running shoes!!!

Yeah, but it depends on where they want to shoot. And on who they have looking after them.......hint, hint. Yeah, I deal in guns on most shoots, but that relationship with LE transcends a bunch of lines. "Oh no guns on this one, Doc?" "Nope." "oh, okay, we have a 415 down the street...""Stay safe, guys"
