Any FIELD MIXER recommendations?

I would greatly appreciate any information/opinions regarding a quality field mixer for use with the DVX-100A. Is there something decent for $400 or less??? If not, what is the lower-end acceptable models? Basically, I just need for the boom/sound person to be able to monitor sound, so as to free up the camera-op to concentrate on the picture and not have to worry about sound. I will be mostly doing documentary work. Thanks....

Sound Device Mixpre would be standard. I wouldn't bother with a 2 channel mixer especially for doc work(but that's just me). The SD 302 would be a good 3 channel choice.

For the budget minded you might try some used mixers. Shure makes pretty good stereo field mixers. Here are some 3 channels for cheap.

Good luck.

Re: Any FIELD MIXER recommendations?

That is the Mixpre I was referring to as the standard. ;)

It is an awesome mixer and well worth the money. It will work great for what you say you need. I just put out the 3 channel used mixers because you will probably find that you need at least 3 channels (sometimes even 4). You can cheat your way around 3 inputs but it's easier to get a 3 channel than go thru that hassle.

That's just my opinion. The Mixpre is awesome and I don't think you will find anyone that has been disappointed by it.

If you need two channels, go with the mixpre. If you only need a single channel portable mic pre with a headphone out, check out their MM-1. It's very high quality, and under $400. It has a handy belt clip, so you can wear it.

Go to http://www.sounddevices.com/products/mm1master.htm for more information.
