Any DP's around Edmonton?

Hey guys, lately I've been wondering if anyone on these boards happens to be a DP living in or around Edmonton. I've never really gone the route of using a DP but after I finish a movie in august, I think Ill want to try it out for the next movie. It could really be handy if there was someone who knows a lot about DVX's on set :).

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

I was born and raised in Edmonton :) Got the hell out of there though pretty quick, not much of a Film industry there as you can probally tell. Which may be good, you might become the master of Edmonton :)

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Haha your right about that Jarred, there's plenty of room for starving artists here.  I guess the only good thing about Edmonton's film industry I kinda like is its lack of it.  For instance, I joined FAVA and they have super low prices for all kinds of equipment, and theres really noone using it :).  Heh, I like that last part... Master of Edmonton!   8).

Oh btw, hows the industry where you moved?  More oppurtunities for success? I myself have planned to save up money and get outta here too, maybe BC is the place to go :).

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

8) Hey, I got my dvx about a month ago, it's good to see that there are other people in Edmonton - some one once said ( not long ago) that there were over 200 indie filmmakers here, I don't believe that, but to even hear that there's another guy with a dvx is a suprise :)
See ya around.

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Ha ha.. yeah Vancouver here prob ally has 1000x more opportunities than there... but if you do weddings or whatever its good to stay there and not have so much competition, well even for film I guess. When you get here dont tell them your from Edmonton, All the total whackos from SCTV came here after it ended and just went more crazy, so Edmonton has kinda a bad wrap here.

If you really wanna kick in the ass move to Jasper for a year in between.. I swear I lost all motivation and was so bored after 6 months it changed my life. I made my life plan and carried on west ;D

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Haha, I always thought of Jasper as a nice relaxing place but when you put it like that, I think your right. Its strange, but it seems like people naturally seem to move west trhoughout their lives. I mean my grandparents came from Germany, moved to Ontario, and my parents moved from there to Edmonton, and Ill most likely be movin to Vancouver. Who knows, maybe Japan is the next stop after that :). Hey Nick, I think your right about those numbers, there's about 300 members in FAVA, which Ill bet makes up most of the filmmaking population of Edmonton. It's cool to see that this awesome DVX site (which I'd rate as the best source of DVX info on the net) has some people from Edmonton, what a nice surprise :).

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

heh heh yes indeed.. There's more to Edmonton than the stupid mall and Wayne Gretzky.

And your right about Jasper being relaxing.. I lived in a Condo complex and there was a store 1/2 block away, and I swear between me and my three roomates we had to pay each other to goto the store because near the end it seemed like an epic journey. Funny since I moved there to be active and Mountain Bike and Snowboard, but getting banned from Marmot ended those athletic goals :)

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

AWWW Edville,
The home of Peter Puck, and Ralph Klein. Ya know I think there is more film work in Calgary...did i say something wrong?

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

hahaha! Jarred thats the funniest thing Ive read in a while, I know exactly what you mean. At one point my bro and I got so lazy we would drive to the 7-11 down the block. A 2 minute walk max :). I wonder how you got banned from Marmot (I havent been there in a long time). And Taylor, I think your right, Calgary seems better than Edmonton, but I havent checked it out in a long time. I hear everybody there waves to each other when they drive?

I was a snowboarder, and back in the day we weren't looked upon very highly (maybe a dozen snowboarders on the hill), so I didn't even have to do anything to get in trouble. Anyways, I got in a fist fight with the Ski-Patrol Police officer (to be honest I kinda started it) and that pretty much ended my ski season.

As for Calgary, yes there is quite the scene there, Im not sure why, maybe cause it's closer to the US. Toronto or Vancouver though is the place to be. I dont think they have even filmed a TV show in Edmonton since SCTV back in the 80s.

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

There used to be a production company in Edville called Applebox and they went out of business a few years ago, owned by CanWest. Try to track down a guy named Hans Diees..he used to run it...probably started another co.
Regarding Calgary...the director Gary Burns lives there...he's a good guy and great director..."Waydowntown" and the "Suburbinators" etc.

Jarred you hell raiser...must be your giant stature that scared the patrol off.

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

I wouldn't say I scared anyone off...after a few swings back and forth 3 ski patrol chased me on my snowboard down the Marmot road to the highway.. and anyone whos been to Marmot you know how long that road is.. So it was more like me running :) Good thing they arn't "real" police or I probally woulda got in some worse trouble.

Anyways, for some reason Hans Diees sounds familiar.

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

LOL! hey, if your ever in WI be sure to swing by, and i'll teach you some Shaolin Kempo, maybe a little ju-jistsu too...you know .. got to have the GLOW! that'll teach those pesky patrols real quick :P

i used to snowboard alot as well... got kicked out of a couple places for jumping off stuff in the restricted areas. now we just wakeboard when we have time to get together in the summer. .. i feel old. :-/

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

I did take some Ju-Jistsu classes about 15 years ago and liked it. I did many years of Lame-o Judo but kept getting in trouble for aggresive contacts. That was a total waste of time, but since Im 6' 8" it was pretty easy for me to leverage people to the ground. Im not a fighter though, when I was young I was dumb but now I just avoid that BS.

The funnest part about working at marmot as a Lifty was the first day they show you an old video of a ski-lift with a buncha dummy weights on it, and they put it in reverse and the entire thing starts spinning and falls over. Woulda loved to shoot that.

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Damn, there's no ski hills around here except rabbit hill... I'll bet I could film a nice movie if I was in marmot, and Ive also heard whistler is nice too.

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Hey my first season pass ever was at Rabbit hill.. I worked at the Happy Mart Gas Station on the end of Calgary Trail (its not the end anymore.. man that place as grown) on a split shift.. I would work from 5-9, go boot out to Rabbit hill and come back and work from 4-8. Man those where the days.. :)

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Heh, yeah Edmonton's growing pretty rapidly lately. I'm not sure when you left, but we're going through a crazy housing boom. I live on the south side, by Dan Knott Junior High School and this used to be on the very edge of the city, now its like Im in the middle of the city cause of all the new neighborhoods. South Edmonton Common is pretty huge now, but the people who designed the roads created slow moving mazes instead :P. Oh, and we got this ring road that's gonna shave about an hour off of the trip to Jasper. Nice :)

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Is this the canuck chat board? Mad doug, long time reader first time caller. Things in montreal are great for filmmaking, english or french. Is Quebec still part of canada? Ha Ha. I guess I should throw in a few hostie colis and tabernacle's just to be on the safe side, never know who is reading these posts.

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Hey Mad Doug, it seems like BC and Quebec/Ontario seem to be the big movie making centres of Canada. Everything in between is apparently uncharted :). I've never been to montreal, come to think of it I havent done much travelling at all. I guess Ive just been paranoid about the language barrier (I only know English).

Re: Any DP's around Edmonton?

Quebec and Toronto are booming. I know a couple DP's though that moved there this year and are coming back because of the winters :)
