Any Digital Photographers?

Just ordered a Canon Rebel XT and I am a semi novice at photography, just wondering if there are any filters I should consider buying and what brand should I lean towards?

For reference I like to work in BW when possible in post so any filters to enhance that would be cool.

Thanks

Yeah, definitely a polarizer, but I don't know about the pro mist--depends on your style I guess. As for black and white, you already have red, blue, and green filters built into the camera. Still cameras have a single CCD or CMOS chip usually covered by a Bayer filter. The Bayer filter makes a checkerboard pattern with a mix of 50% green pixels, 25% red pixels, and 25% blue pixels. A complex algorithm reconstructs the color at each pixel using the neighboring pixels. You can think of it as a form of color sampling. Anyway, the bottom line is that you can simulate the use of any mix of red, green, or blue filters in a black and white image using the channel mixer in Photoshop.

For filter brands, some top brands of circular filters are B+W (Schneider), Hoya, and Heliopan. For square filters like ND grads, the top brands are Singh-Ray, Lee, and Hitech (Formatt).

For black and white it will get rid of reflections and you'll have to compensate for it by 2 stops.

For color it can be used to saturate colors, as well as the two things I mentioned before.

An ND is basically sun glasses for the lens. They reduce the light hitting the sensor (or film) but doesn't do anything to affect color balance.

No worries, check out the B&H (bhphoto.com) website. They've got tons of great info there.

I happen to like Hoya filtersa lot. I've got a Hoya UV covering my DVX leica. Though, that filter is more expensive than B+W's circular pol's.

The only reason I see to get that Hoya over a B+W would be if you were using a SUPER wide angle lens, and are worried about vignetting. Because that's one of their low profile filters.

If your not worried about that then, I would say it's a toss up because the 58mm circular pol's from both companies are about the same price.

Cool Bommerang! How much did you get it for? I'm waiting for the price to drop hoefully so I can pick one up too. So much to buy and not enough money. Take some pics and post some up.

As we're talking about photography, want to know something that sucks? My A1 has been giving me tons of trouble lately.

The battery contacts in the auto winder were all gunked up from so many batteries, so I got them all cleaned. I took out my camera today, only to find that the battery that I replaced last week is burned out. So now I have to go to the shop and find out why it's not holding a charge. Damn electronic shutters.:thumbdown

(Sorry for the thread deveation.)
