Any Colorado DVXusers?

I've got a meeting in Denver coming up at the end of the month and have decided to take a few days off after the meeting. Any suggestions for how to spend 4 days starting out from Denver? It looks like ski season is just about over--or will be by the end of the month. I'm up for just about anything. Last visit I went hiking in RMNP, but it seems like some of the mountain roads will still be closed. Thanks.

Lots to do

Lots to do

There's lots to do here is Colorado.

if you really want to see something unique, about a three hour drive from Denver is the Sand Dunes National monument. It is like stepping into the Arabian desert. You want desert stock footage? This is for you!

We got museums downtown if you care for that sort of thing. The Peak to Peak Highway is a gorgeous scenic drive close to town. Estes Park, Manitou Springs, Aspen, all these places are very picturesque. You can do all the hiking you want.

And it is spring so the Elk are frisky, and running around near town.

Email me when you get in, maybe we can have a couple beers at a brewpub or something.

Hey TC--yeah, I went straight to Rocky Mountain National Park on my last trip--incredibly beautiful with great hiking. A thunderstorm in the mountains every summer afternoon like clockwork. I'm looking to see some other sights this time and although I like to hike, climbing isn't my bag.

Speedbump--thanks, I'll do a little research on your suggestions--they sound good. I love museums, but Wasington has about a thousand of them, so I'm looking to enjoy some mountain scenery. I'll definitely drop you a note--the brewpub thing sounds good.

Drop me a line as well Barry. I live just east of Denver in Aurora. I can't offer to be a tour guide, but I can certainly make time to get together for a few beers.

There are a thousand things to see within an hour or so of Denver. Some are pretty close like Red Rocks amphitheater, nad some are a bit farther like Estes Park. You can usually find some skiing right up to early summer, but I don't know how good it will be.

Royal Gorge is great, if a bit pricey. It's about a 2.5 hour drive from Denver. The Sand Dunes are supposed to be breathtaking, but a bit far (IMHO) for a day trip. You could stay in Alamosa and see them, then head further West to the Mesa Verde monument. There are some cool mining towns, a few of which have been converted to mini Vegases with limited stakes gambling (Blackhawk, Central City and Criple Creek)

The Air Force Academy is about 45 minutes south, near Colorado Springs. They have a neat tour, and the Springs has some cool stuff like Seven Falls and The Garden of the Gods, which is breathtaking.

There is some good hikes within a half hour of Denver. You might be able to do Mt Evans which isn't too far, although I'm not sure if the road to the trailhead is open this early in the season.

If you like baseball, I can tell you that Coors Field is a great place to take in a game.

There's really too much stuff to list, but it's a great place to fish, hike, golf, drink and shoot (video and film that is)

Thanks for the suggestions and I'll definitely try to look you up. My meeting finishes on a Monday night (May 2) and I'm leaving on Saturday, so I've got four days to play. I'm not planning on staying in Denver after the meeting, but driving somewhere and chilling out a bit. Maybe stay in two different locations before heading back to Denver for my flight out. I've been to Mesa Verde and really enjoyed it, but I'd like to see different areas this trip. I wouldn't mind finding a couple cool towns and splitting my time between hiking/photographing and hanging around town.
