Any Canadians here?

I'll be flying out to Canada in a few days and was hoping to pick up some HVX related items.

The main one is a Steadicam Merlin and some 32gb P2 cards. I'm madly googling to see if I can find some street prices and good locations to buy but have pretty much drawn a blank.

I'm flying into Toronto with the aim of heading to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia then a lazy winding way back east to Vancouver passing through the major cities on the way.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could let me know of a good place to buy the items above and a rough street price inc. any applicable Tax's.
Cheers

If you're going to be in Toronto, I'd check out http://vistek.ca they've got a lot of merchandise. I haven't checked their website for prices or anything, but I almost guarantee that they'll have what you're looking for.

It's pretty easy to find, right on Queen st. and if you're heading out west, there's also a few in Alberta I believe. Good luck

Indigo,

I live in the Big Smoke, as Toronto is affectionately known.

Vistek is pretty good, although I prefer the Henry's on Queen Street a couple blocks just east of Yonge Street. Service is much better (and you don't get an elitist attitude).

I was in there last weekend and the 32 Gig P2 card was something in the neighborhood of $1,649. Vistek advertises them for $1849 (another reason I don't like Vistek as much).

They also apparently have your Steadicam Merlin for $849.99. If they don't have stock, there's a Vistek further east on Queen Street, like btownproductions mentioned.

Sales taxes in Ontario are (or should be) criminal though. Provincial sales tax is 8% and federal goods and services tax is 5% for a total of 13% (TIME FOR A REVOLUTION!). :)

P.S. I thought Vancouver was west - guess you could take the long way 'round. ;) :)

Good tip Nexis, I don't atually live in Toronto, I was just going to school there last year, so I'm sure you know the area a lot better than I do. I've also heard great things of the Henry's dowtown. I've never been there personally.

Sorry Indigo, I wasn't aware that Vistek was over-priced, I just knew they had a good selection. I have however heard a lot of good things of the Henry's there.

Vistek will usually price match with Henry's and vice versa. But I've been jerked around by Vistek a couple of times ("We won't price match unless Henry's has it in stock"), so I prefer Henry's.

dvshop.ca is also in the Toronto region, and their prices and service are top notch. I'm in Calgary and even still I've never had a problem with them long distance. Vistek is a rip-off, stay away.

Buy in Alberta. No provincial sales tax. :)

Vistek is great here(they will price match) as is Cine Audio/Visual.
Sure, Vistek will price match with any local vendor - but as far as I understand it, there's no other competition, so that doesn't take you too far. They will not match with online stores in Canada or any other location. I was excited to see the Cine A/V link, but the site is one of those cumbersome flash sites, and it doesn't look like they have an online catalog. Am I missing something there?

Cine A/V is great if you are actually shopping in AB and not online. I got a great deal there last year on a new HVX but they won't price match at all.

Thanks to all that have replied!

I've now got something to work with.... and the prices look good.

Your attitude sums up everything that I read and heard about Canada and its people.... friendly, welcoming and in possession of a fantastic quality of life.

This obviously isn't the place to discuss this sort of thing but I admit the reason that I'm having this (quickish) trip around Canada is that I'm looking to immigrate and wanted to have a better hands on feel before I send in my application. I've looked the world over from the US to South Africa to Australia and I can't seem to find a single thing I don't like about Canada (although I'm used to 7/8 weeks holiday a year!). I'm sure people will tell me I'm all wrong but....

I have a flight into Toronto and a flight out of Vancouver I expect to cover quite a bit of ground but I might just take you up on the beer! :)
Cheers

As a tourist I believe that I can reclaim all the sales tax etc when I leave Canada.... well according to Google anyway!

Indy.....

That's true of provincial sales tax, but not federal GST, I believe.

Anyway, pm me before you get into Toronto. I'll buy you a beer (and not that crappy American stuff). :)

This is a little off topic but I just found out from a rep who was at NAB that Panasonic Canada may only release the HMC150 or the HPX170 in Canada. Not both.

If this is true, I'm wondering the rational behind this. Maybe one of the Panasonic Canada people will explain.

Also, does anyone know if the HVX200A is available up here yet? Or will be at all?
