Hey guys,

Does anyone knows how to setup a blackmagic decklink HD extreme 2 so that I can capture video coming from an HDMI input (1080i)?

I bought this converter http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/672690-REG/Smart_AVI_CVH_01S_CVH_01S_Component_VGA_Audio.html that outputs the video coming from the graphics card to 1080i but I'm still not able to configure my Decklink HD extreme 2 so I can capture the video to FCP 6.

In FCP 6 this are the settings I tried...

EASY SETUP
Format: Blackmagic RGB 10 bit
Use: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94 - 10 bit RGB 4:4:4
Rate: 29.97

AUDIO/VIDEO SETTINGS
Sequence preset: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94 - 10 bit RGB 4:4:4
Capture preset: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94 - 10 bit RGB 4:4:4
Device control preset: Non-controllable device (since the video is coming from the converter that comes from the VGA out of the computer)
Video playback: Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main

I have a mac pro quad-core, 16GM ram, and a GSPEED ES 4T Raid to store the video.

I read the entire manual and there is nothing that shows you how to deal with this... Any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Sorry for the bad news, but it is not gonna work.

from Decklink F.A.Q:

Can I capture from the output of a computer or graphic cards?

Yes.Blackmagic capture cards with HDMI inputs can capture from the DVI or HDMI outputs of a graphic card (Providing the source is not HDCP protected.)
To capture from a graphics card the output must be set to a supported resolution of the Blackmagic card you are capturing to. For example if you want to capture 720p50, the graphics card’s output would need to be set to 1280x720 @ 50Hz.
It is not possible to capture from graphics cards with a VGA output.

If Blackmagic thought that converting VGA to HDMI by means of a signal converter was feasable, they most probably would have mentioned it.

Also it is interesting that you have invested in this card but have no proper video monitor?

Note:If you still wanna go ahead and give it a try, you ll see the connection diagrams in Blackmagic website: it s pretty straightforward though: VGA cable out of your graphic card goes into Smart AVI converter VGA in, HDMI cable comes out of your Smart AVI goes into Decklink Extreme HDMI in.

I just tried to capture from the HDMI output of a graphics card to the HDMI input of the blackmagic and this is what it showed at first:

Then I tried reconnecting the cable and this happen:

I have no idea why the screen turn like this... and for some reason I'm still not able to capture any video before windows starts... All I want to be able to do is to capture the BIOS setup of a computer without actually recording a monitor screen using a video camera... any ideas?

Sorry no idea here either...

OK so you want to record the bios set up of a pc - that is (im assuming) close to your mac. Therefore you have the PC plugged into a screen and that screen has two outputs. From the second output your are using a VGA to HDMI converter into your blackmagic HD extreme 2 to try and capture?

So, from your last image. The box you are using to convert from VGA to HDMI is not outputting any red channel. The first thing you need to do is - get your hands on another monitor - a friends perhaps to see where this problem is occurring. If it works on another monitor it could be the output on the monitor you are using for example is a bit dodgy.

Als, whilst you can capture and work in
Capture preset: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94 - 10 bit RGB 4:4:4
there's no need to. And Id suggest also your Gspeed es will choke like a chicken on this. Use a prores preset, Id go straight for standard prores 4:2:2. Its good enough.

Noel,

I plug the HDMI output of a PC's graphic card, directly to the HDMI input of the blackmagic using HDMI cables. I also tried plugging the DVI output of a Mac G5 directly to the HDMI input of the blackmagic and same thing... the screen turn blue or pink in the blacmagic capture software (Media express)
