Any Alternative To Firestore

Hi All,

I inquired about the FS-4 (80GB) protable hard disk drive for my DVX100A in Malaysia & the sales rep. told me it costs RM7,500.00! My goodness! My jaw dropped when I saw such a huge amount for a portable harddisk drive. The warranty expires after only 12 months. Why are they so expensive? Thats' nearly the cost of my DVX100A already. I'm not willing to pay so much for a Firestore.

Do you know if it's possible to just buy an external 80GB harddisk with firewire connectors for around RM200 & just hook it up to the firewire connector on the DVX100A? Or is it more complicated than that? I need answers because my wedding clients frequently request me to do express edit, meaning the morning's wedding ceremony should be shown at the dinner the same day. I only have 5-6 hours between the ending of the wedding ceremony & the dinner to edit the video into a 7 min highlight video. Thanks in advance.

Andrew

A standalone hard drive wouldn't work because there's nothing to control how data is written to it -- the job of a computer. What you can do, though, is use a laptop and software like DV Rack, Premier, etc. to capture directly from your camera. It's more expensive, but least then you have use of the laptop for editing right at your location, as well as the other obvious uses.

Alternatives to the FireStore include the nNovia QuickCapture and the Sony DR60, but they both cost about the same as the FireStore.

You should be able to get the non-pro FS-4 for half the price you mentioned; the FS-4 40gb was going for about US$700 not too long ago, but I haven't kept up on the pricing since then.
