Hi everyone,

I did a video of a physique competitor who trains at the gym : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfvkGBF_IkY

I would like to specialize in these kinds of video in the future.

In order to get better as a filmmaker for this, i would appreciate if some people have comments about my videography in the video.

Thanks in advance,
Have a good day,

Hi Deleuze3,

Looks good. First things that cross my mind are the low light situation and also the placing of your subject in the frame. I would frame her to the right if she looks to the left and visa versa. She's sometimes to centered witch creates a lot of waste on the sides.
Also when she looks up front, make sure she's centered in the frame.

Best regards,

The very first thing I notice isn't really your photo but the graphics :D my eyes are hurting a bit from the various fonts / colors / styles. I'd choose a simpler layout, maybe just one font, and two styles or color.

The next thing I notice is the time line… it makes me think twice about watching the video at all, because I don't have 10 minutes to spare.

We did a simpler version where the fitness expert was in a white-out on a matte on the floor. The object was to convey excersises to do to train specfic areas of the body. We deliberately stayed under 1.5 minute because the average person will never watch a clip longer than that on YouTube unless it contains babies / fails / pranks.
If you do decide to stick in that lenght of clip and try to sell the character of Julia Axford, I'd try to work some gimmicks into the video. People love people who have fun with people, so maybe she can interact with someone here and there. Preferrebly someone she already clicks with… jokes around with etc.

You could probably tighten up the excersise parts… the first one we don't need to see her do 4 reps, three tops and maybe just two followed up by her words on sets and so on.
The second excersise had 4 cuts from side to front to side to side. That was a bit much. I already understood the excersise from the first side and front cut.

It really is a tough one to crack, because one is always affraid about getting "enough" footage.

I think that I'd try to create the character of Julia Axford… stylize it a bit more including graphics and so on. Do you know any guys or gals who are great at graphics? Maybe you could start out a cooperation between the two of you.

I'm thinking mini versions of shows like LA Ink and that Custom Bikes show… ofcourse Julia would have to step into character quite a lot more.

Anyways, that's just off the top of my head.

The video seemed too shaky. I'd invest in a Glidecam or other type of device to reduce camera shake during movements. The shakiness made the video look too amateurish.

For me the main issues are...

- Shaky cam ( need to find a way to better stabilize the camera or correct this in post )
- Use transparent background graphics behind your text to separate it from the video image, use bolder sans-serif text ( avoid thin fonts )
- Some sort of portable lighting, even if it's on camera, to lift your subject from the background and produce better "modeling" on their face
- Your audio was good, but it could be better

thanks for all these advices, it helps me to become a better videographer.
those are great comments i wouldnt have thought without professional advices
